wiper woes

I have been having problems with my battery going flat recently and i have now dicovered why. One of the shafts which turns the wipers has rusted up so as the spindle does not turn within its shaft as it should, but rather the spindle and shaft turn as one. This makes for a stiff and sluggish mechanism.

What happened is that the mechanism was so stiff that the wipers were not returning fully to the 'park' position, but the motor was still trying to move the wipers, thus sapping power from the battery.

I have removed the wiper mechanism from the car, but I can't free the spindle. The question is, do I take it to my local garage to try and free it (estimate £75 to £100) or get a new mechanism. Any ideas of cost of a mechanism, and where one is available (transend out of stock)?

wipers all fixed now. It was a seized spindle. Bloody akward to get the assembly back in to the car though. You need rubber wrists to bend around all the other stuff around the motor to put some of the bolts which hold it in place back.

Washers next thing to fix. All pipes are connected, the motor whirs but no water comes out of the jets. Strange!! At least I am back on the road now.
