Wiper problem

I have an 83 944, and no matter where you put the wiper stalk the wipers are on, in the off position they are working on the intermitant setting.. however if you fiddle the stalk and get it to rest between 2 positions to break the circuit, it works a a fix for now.

is this a known problem? any ideas?

Usual problem is the switch unit you could remove it and check and clean the contacts or buy a secondhand replacement but make sure you get the right year as I believe early units don't offer the headlamp washer when pushed forward or the 3 normal speeds although I may be wrong. Mine dod this last year and I squirted lots of WD40 into the unit with it in the car (and lots of towels to catch the mess) leave it for a while then operate the switch with engine off to clear the contacts if necessary re-spray. It may work, it did for mine.

If you need the switch I have a brown one left over that I will never use as my wheel is black so won't match.
Going for a song if it's any good?
Otherwise it'll sit in my garage for 30 years!!
Cheers
Tim
