wiper knock

Hi,

New issue on the 944.

I ssem to have developed a clicking/knock when the driver side wiper arm is vertical. I've tried with the wipers pointed away from the screen (not touching the glass), and its the same. Leading me to think it must be the mechanism/motor?

It definitely sounds like its coming from near the drivers windscreen pillar, and have noticed you can get replacement Wiper Link Arms.

Anyone else had this problem?

 
I had that noise and it turned out to be the wiper arm fouling the little plastic cover that goes over the wire running to the in-screen aerial. The cover had broken. A new plastic cover which screwed down both ends fixed the problem.
 
Worth getting the scuttle cover off and taking a look at what is happening when the wipers are moving. Possibly the bolt that fastens the assembly to the scuttle/bulkhead is loose. Perhaps the arm assembly is bent or a bearing is faulty. I've seen assemblies cheap on eBay. I recently bought a good wiper motor on there. Just replace the whole lot perhaps including the motor for around £25 second-hand. Job done. Next. [:D]
 
You can see at least some of the linkage working if you pull the rubber seal off the bulkhead at the back of the engine bay so you can lift the front of the thin plastic shield over the heater airbox and wiper gear. Be gentle with that plastic cover, they're a bit fragile. Make sure there's nothing fouling the mechanism. You might get away with cleaning and greasing the joints you can reach, but to get at all of it you have to take out the heater box.

Found the diagram above, which helps a bit.
I'll get the cover off and take a look.. maybe disconnect one side then the other to find out exactly where its coming from.
 
On my 944, a late 2.7 model, you can just get the wiper assembly off without disturbing the heater. The trick is to release the straight actuating arm from it's balljoint on the passengers side wiper and then move the short balljoint section under the alloy frame.
Putting it back is just a reverse of removal - I used a screewdriver to push the arm back on to the balljoint

The nut securing the frame to the body on the passengers side is a pain to remove and replace. I found that a 1/4 inch socket drive set helped, with another nut under the actual nut in the socket to act as a spacer when refitting the nut.
