Whole body respray

I am thinking of giving my white 944 cab a makeover on the paintwork and am thinking of a more vibrant colour rather than the current white. Should I go for the Porsche 944 colours or other Porsche model colours or something different?

Can someone recommend a reputable paintshop and possible colours to go with the cab?
What will be the likely cost?

Charles

Much as I hate the colour normally, Big Dave posted a pic on 968UK of a 968 in that orangey-gold colour that was all the rage a few years ago and it looked superb, so there's a suggestion.

Colour change will cost a lot more than just a respray in white though; either to remove the engine and strip the bay so it can be painted (along with door shuts etc.) or in reduced value of the car as it wil be obvious it's colour changed if that isn't done. I'd just get it redone in white (assuming it even needs to be redone if you don't change the colour?) White is making a comeback and it has always suited the 944.

Fen is right. White is regaining popularity, there were some pictures posted by another member of his white coupe outside an industrial unit & he had sprayed the area between the rear lights black (where the reg plate goes) this made the rear look even better IMHO. Maybe someone knows a link to the photos.

Rather than changing colour entirely, how about if you used Grandprix White for the respray. It is much brighter and attractive IMHO than the rather creamy white that Porsche used for the 944. You possibly wouldn't need all the engine bay and door shuts done in this case.

I almost suggested the same. I saw a car (forget what, some old Datsun or something) in Retro Cars magazine that was painted in the base white used to mix light colours and that was white. It looked superb.

Sounds like GrandPrix White is a possible candidate. I have already de-amber the indicator lights in mine and also ordered (on his way from US) some real aluminium dash kit.

I wonder will it looks nice (or weird) if I have some colour side scripts with matching mirror colours? Will it look strange on the cab?

Any idea how much a respray in GP white will cost?

Regards
Charles

I was going to suggest coloured side decal as I really like that look, especially on white.

The reason I didn't is because the car is a cab and I assume has a black hood. I think cars look best when they are "monochrome" by which I mean two colours. Usually one is silver because of the wheels, headlights etc. and the other is the paint colour. With a cab you have a hood also and unless the car is black or Cobalt blue the hood will be contrasting (as only black or Cobalt hoods were available on the 944 cab). To be monochrome you'd need black or white wheels and a black decal, which to be honest would look rubbish.

White isn't a realistic option, but you could go with a coloured hood, though really it would have to be blue to look right in my opinion (you could get green or burgundy also), and then a matching blue decal. How that would go with your interior I don't know.

Next problem is what graphic to have down the side. You can't have "Turbo", "944" is a bit short and "Cabriolet" is best left for XR3i drivers. I quite like the Ford GT stripes currently copied as options on the Fiesta and Focus ST versions, especially in blue on a white car (not necessarily as well as the "Viper" stripes Ford use) and I meant to suggest to Rick last time I saw him that a similar stripe with "944", "944S", "944S2" etc. might look good on the 944. They would work OK with silver wheels, but I really like the matching rims and graphic look.

Leave the mirrors white - I think the contrast mirrors on the 997 GT3RS are a mistake personally.

I forgot about cost.

The guy I use for paint did a cab in Guards red a couple of years ago for ÂŁ1,400 I believe. It was a good finish and it still looks good now after a fai bit of time settling down. He quoted me ÂŁ1,200 to make my 944 really nice, which boiled down to painting everything but the roof. I guess I will get it done at some point after the car is running again.

I trust him to do all my paint anyway. He's in Devon though.

For the respray you could try Streamline. They're recommended by a few of us and they did the total respray on 'baby WUF'

Look on this London Region thread. http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=235552

As regards stripes and decals you could contact me off forum. WUF is currently a 944 GT !

GrandPrix White - no need for further discussions! After every 944 I've ever seen my 1st lux still stands out on my mind as the nicest looking I've seen (ignoring obviously the condition of the car.. which was dire!) the decals like the logo above the rear bumper stood out beautifully and it looked FAB!

If I was at work I could email you the picture I have which I think shows it best but

http://www.cannell.co.uk/images/Cannell_web/hc_0404%2016%209.jpg

see lots of other pics on pages 13 onwards of the same event on ricks website but none of them quite capture the way the car actually looked. I have one picture ever which I liked of the car so its not Ricks photo work.

Not sure if my white is a GP White or creamy white as others mentioned. Just wonder how many different whites were available for the cab in 1989? How I do I find out?

Charles

The black paint on the back between the lights looks quite nice. From the picture, it looks like the same white colour as my my cab.

That 9FF 944 twin turbo project was white with white wheels and red 9FF decals running down the sills. It looked stunning.

Charles.
Just out of interest ,, what colour is the hood on your car.?? I suspect itl be blue.???
You could always do the indicators in blue to match..

Dave,

The hood on mine is black. I quite like those redout back lights.
Does anyone know if there are more than one 944 white colours available for the year 1989? The white on the 997 seems quite white - is it GP White the same as the 944?

Charles

Woohoo! Blackout lights! then you can blackout your windows! then you can fit a bigger exhaust! and fake alloys that spin round after you've stopped! [:'(]

thinking basement jaxx and a Vauxhall Corsa on the one way system anyone?

- okay so they might not look overly naff in certain circumstances

- - edited to allay *some* sarcasm - -

Through the 80's white 4 cylinder Porsches were Alpine white, 6 cylinder were Grand Prix white.
