As a technical exercise, then, the 997 Turbo is hugely impressive. And yet I wouldn't buy one any more than I'd go on holiday this year to Baden-Baden.

Some of this is down to the styling. The Porsche Turbos from the late Seventies were pretty, almost dainty little things. And they were simple. The 997 is none of that. It is small compared with most supercars, but it doesn't look it, and it's been blunderbussed with trinketry.

Every panel, every small corner, every nook and every cranny is fussy and overdone. And on my test car the brake callipers were yellow. I'm sorry, but how complete does your life have to be for you to worry about the colour of your brake callipers? I know of no one apart from David Bowie who wakes every morning to think: "Hmm, I'm good-looking, rich, a rock star and crikey, I'm also married to a supermodel."

Inside there was a problem too. My car had the optional sports seats, which have electrically adjustable side supports. Fine, but even on their widest setting they're still too small for those who haven't seen their feet in a while. If you're not David Bowie, stick with the standard seats. They're fine.

The seats, however, and the brake callipers are only small reasons why I wouldn't have the 997 Turbo. It isn't even the Onanist City Boy image that still clings to the car. No, for me, I would steer clear for exactly the same reason you will not be taking your holidays in Dortmund. There's no passion.

Just last week I drove the new Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. It was, of course, a preposterous car, loud and shouty where the Porsche is smooth and unruffled. Jarring and stiff where the Porsche is comfortable and controlled. It isn't as fast as the Porsche either, despite being £33,000 more expensive. And yet the Lambo grabs you by the heart and the Porsche just doesn't.

Even though the 911 is the better car, by hundreds of miles, I'd buy the Gallardo. But then I'm a man who's having two holidays this summer. One in the Isle of Man. And one in Botswana.

Verdict
Brilliant, efficient, German and dull

When my GT3 was used for the Top Gear shoot for the American edition I had the pleasure of hearing JC tell James May that the GT3 was one of the vey best cars he had driven followed closely by the 996 turbo....off Camera of course during the rehersal... he is just a pr*t who has built a career in saying controversial stuff. Ignore him.

Regards

Kevin

I find Mr C amusing most of the time but the gutter Sun journalism language and innapropriate use of the Lords name fatally undermines his credibility.

Good job the cars speak for themselves.

I not sure what is wrong with what he said as that is exactly what the mass market feel about Porsches. I particular like Porsche for that very reason i.e. they blend in with the everyday world... I would more than happily go to Tesco in a Turbo but think twice in a Ferrari and I would be a laughing stock at Tesco if I pulled up in a Lambo...

Oh, but I also agree with Kevin that Clarkson has build his career in saying controversial stuff, and that is why he is popular...

JC said himself that he got rid of his Ferrari 355 spyder because he couldn't leave it anywhere with the roof down because people would spit in it so to criticise Porsche for thier image is a bit rich. However I think unwhitingly he pays Porsche the ultimate compliment because despite his dislike for the brand he is usually very complimentary about the capabilities of the cars even if it is said through gritted yellow teeth.

I for one am glad Clarkson wouldn't ever buy a Porsche. It would devalue them! I think he just feels backed into a corner now on his bigoted views of Porsche given his 2 coworkers May (Boxter) and Hammond (997C2S) on TopGear both have Porsches, as will Jason Plato (997TT) of Fifth Gear soon.

Personally I think he's found his perfect match in his Ford GT. Does 4mpg, breaks down all the time, has to crawl into it when it is parked next to another car in any car park (as it's got a roof on the door), blocks the A4 flyover in West London because it's too wide to fit, and the car alarm goes off all the time for no good reason. I believe he's actually sold and re-bought the car back from the same dealer a fair few times now as a result!!

And did you hear what he said this evening on TopGear when he took it to the big air-show here the other weekend; it's apparently still there as it wouldn't rev passed 600rpm when he tried to go home afterwards! JC's opinion on what cars to buy doesn't exactly hold up much credibility given his own record. Personally, I had an amazing time in my 997C2S Cab when I went there and back to the same air-show the other weekend

Bit rich him calling the 997TT "Boring" and very German when the man drives an SLK as his daily piece of kit!!

I don't think that any self-respecting petrol-head takes anything Clarkson says nowadays with anything but a pinch of salt.

In fact, after last weeks terrible episode of Top Gear, I elected to instead watch the DTM - which I had recorded earlier in the afternoon. Much more exciting entertainment! I don't think I'll be bothering to watch Top Gear much in future.

I concur, TopGear used to be my favorite show. Fifth Gear has now taken that mantle...

Surely JC said, last night, that his supercar of choice - a US Ford muscle car - was stuck somewhere because it would not work properly.

If that is a reflection of his choice and his willingness to put up with a car that cannot go [Nova?], then it really says more about JC than anything else...

Entertaining though - especially if you think about how he must have looked and felt when his car would not start [:D]

Oh it started alright, which is a great improvement on past performance. However, the rev limiter cut in at 600 rpm. Which makes a swift getaway a little difficult. [:D]

I do still enjoy Top gear, it is entertaining, but the problem is they have got carried away with the fact that a lot of non car people view it and have now started to concentrate too much on the 'comedy' of cars/caravans, Jeremy's realtionship with Hamster & Captain Slow and not enough on the actual cars. Still I do find it fun in the same way say Emmerdale farm is!. Obviously the programme appeals to a much wider audience becuase of all that stuff, lot of people I know that dont really care much about cars watch it.
I do watch 5th gear if I know something good is going to be on, but really the characters on 5th gear just annoy me, with the exception of Jason Plato. VBH's voice has just started grinding on me. Tiff's constant twitching & razing around now annoys me, and the chap with the beard is hmmm just annoying to me Im afraid!!..oh dear bit of a theme there then!

His report on the Lambo Gallardo was full of errors as well. He actually said that the V10 engine packed 5## ITALIAN horses. Well every self respecting school kid knows that the new Lambo's are as German as handlebar moustaches and the engines are Audi through and through.

I've mentioned this before on a previous thread, but Top Gear is now nothing more than a light-entertainment show, and no longer caters for the car enthusiast. At least 5th Gear - despite one or two of its more 'irritating' presenters - does a fair-fist of reviewing a car properly, and demonstrating its capabilities.

Interesting analogy with Emerdale, but if I wanted to watch mindless entertainment (which I sometimes do), then Takeshi's Castle is a far better proposition in my book! [:D]

Do you not think he is fact just milking the "There is no such thing as bad publicity" angle? Just by being controversial elicits these sort of responses and ensures that TG is kept in the frame. I love it for the entertainment but take everything that is said with a pinch of salt. It's great when they start arguing points of view on the cool wall and if you watch JC he does everything deadpan but I always think there is a twinkle in his eye whilst he is thinking something like "I bet those tw4ts on the PCGB/pistonheads site will be having my guts for garters now [:D]" IMHO
