Which tyres?

I will need new tyres soon and wondered what rubber everybody else is wearing.

I have an 88 Turbo with standard 205/55/16 and 245/45/16 tyre sizes.

What can you recommend or suggest to avoid?

I would be looking to strike reasonable balance between grip and wear rate.

Many thanks,

Andrew Garnett.

Just had set of 4 N1 rated Continental Contisport Contacts fitted to my 89 911 Turbo. £430 all up including fitting, balancing, valves and VAT. Only done around 30miles in them so far so difficult to tell how they perform (had Bridgestone S02' s before). Looked at Eagle F1' s (had them on my old 3.2 Carrera and I thought they performed really well) although eventually swayed by OPC advice to go for approved Porsche fitment and currently only Contisport Contacts fit that spec for the early turbo.

I currently have Bridgestones SO2 on my ' 94 turbo 3.6, standard sizes (225/40ZR18, 265/35ZR18). Fantastic grip but create too much road noise.
I ordered SO3, they arrived but were not N-rated so I rejected them.

I hear the new Pirelli Rosso' s are good and grippy but at the expense of mileage, thought I haven' t tried them yet.

Best regards

Emilios

I ran Yokohamas when I had my 1993 Turbo 3.6 a couple of years ago. They had tremendous grip and didn' t wear to quickly either. I can' t remember if the road noise was better or worse than the Continentals that were on before.

Cheers

I had Pirelli P-Zero' s fitted to the car when new - good grip and wear rate. I now have Bridgestone S02' s (N1) but find them very noisy and more expensive than Pirelli' s. Out of the 2 I prefer the Pirelli' s.

I have been getting quotes for replacements and the Continental Contisport N1 does seem to be the recommended tyre.

Micheldever tyres are wining at the moment with a mail order price of £376.

I know this isnt the main focus of this thread but.....

What the hell is N1? My tyres are Continental sportcontact 2 which have a big N2 on them. What is the difference?

Also, there are loads of ads in car mags for ' PU' as in ' Front PU Aerokit' . What does this refer to (I' m sure I will kick myself when someone tells me)?

I got my Contisport Contacts from Protyre in Exeter (cheapest I found after shopping around). I understand Micheldever (Winchester) are part of the same group. I paid £396 for the 4 tyres fitted (inc VAT) and the rest (approx £32) for the valves, balancing, disposal of old. So your mail order quote of £376 seems pretty good.

N ratings "" All Porsche approved tyres are given an N rating. When first approved they are given the N1 if a newer version of the same tyre is tested at a later date this is then given the N2 rating and so on. Only Porsche approved tyres are N rated.

Did you guy' s know that if you fit " non Porsche rated" tyres this could affect your insurance, should you need to claim. Worth thinking about !!

I have never told my insurance company(s) about my non ' N' rated tyres, and they have never asked. Also, when my previous car was written-off (not my fault; someone drove at approx. 50mph straight into the front, on my side of the road, and in a 30mph area), the insurance company paid out with no questions.

Tell them by all means, but they have probably not heard of ' N' rated, and don' t care as long as they are road-legal, and are of the appropriate size/rating etc.
