Which gearbox oil does everyone use?

Going to get the gearbox oil changed in my lux but just wondered what everyone else uses or recommends?
Also has anyone used the castrol 'high mileage' engine oil and is it any good. Going to do an oil and filter change too but im not sure what to use for the best.
 
I just switched recently from OEM gearbox oil to Mobil 1 fully synthetic. Very impressed so far - quieter running, smoother changes and much better after a high speed run, not 'too' expensive either as you can buy it by the litre.
 
EMC use 'High Mileage' in their racers. Swepco is highly regarded for the transaxle. Whether it can quieten the howl on my 2.7 remains to be seen (Ive named the car Banshee!).
 
I'm using RedLine 75w90 NS (NS being the one for open diffs) after doing reading through a lot of old threads on this and other forums.

So far so good although I suspect all the ones that are recommended are much of a muchness.

Do you mean Mobil 1 engine oil? The recommended oil for the 924S is a specific gear oil which has pressure additives for gear use-SAE-75/90 (from memory)-& the lux would surely be the same.
The only car with a separate gearbox that used the same oil as the engine that I have ever had was a Rover Vitesse Sport Turbo 2L

yes 75/90 is what i have here and it is indeed mobil 1 halfords purchase, i have no whine :) unless the g/f is in the car with me
 
I used Swepco and it did make the whine a little quieter. Stinks to high heaven though so wear gloves.
 
In my experience 75W90 is too light.

I use Castrol XJ 75W140 and am very pleased with it.
 
I've got Swepco, seems to be fine. Redline has a good rep too.

Oh no, not the engine oil debate again!! (deep breath) I wouldn't bother with so called 'high milage' engine oils. Marketting hype in my opinion. How are they different from any other decent oil of the same grade? you don't get any higher milge than aero engines and they use they same spec oil after 5 years on wing and umpteen millions of miles as they do when they are brand new and no car manufacturers handbook specifies different oils depending on the cars age and milage. Just get a good quality oil at Porsches recommended grade (5w - 15w, 40 or 50 for the UK) - don't scrimp on cost, even expensive oil is cheap.

If your MGB has overdrive (or almost any car with a Laycock OD) you will need engine oil (15W50 or 20W50) unless you want a slow death for the OD ;).

I'm glad this thread came up as I am about to change mine.

Regarding 'High Mileage' oil etc. it's usually one of the cheaper oils. My guess is that it probably has less additives in than most other oils and contains things like seal swellers to stop the seals from weeping and may be missing anti sludging additives and it may even have more ZDDP in it (more crucial for cars over 20 years old where the metals were different, but it can damage a cat in a modern car, hence it has been removed). Most 'old school' oils like Castrol Classic 20W50 and Penrite are like this. When I went to EMC he suggested to stay away from 0W40 but that 15W40 is fine in either flavour of Semi or Multigrade.
