trying to accurately identify some brake calipers i have.

i believe both of them are either 928s4 or 968 m030 calipers

they both look identical apart from the piston size, they both accept the same pads

one set has piston sizes approx 32mm/40mm on the outside diameter

the other calipers are 39/45mm od (size of piston housing)
i can see part numbers on the inside of these calipers which are 20.4565.00 and 20.4564.00, the different part numbers dictate each side of the caliper (2 part caliper)

they both have exactly the same mounting points (radial) and the same inlet port, and 2 bleed nipples at one end.

can any1 identify each caliper for me

many thanks

I'd suggest that the only way to correctly identify them is posting pictures.

IIRC I think 968 m030 calipers would only fit under 17" wheels, I'm assuming ur running 16" wheels ?

there are many different versions of the same brembo mono bloc caliper some of which are identical internals only difference is the color and finish on the outside porsche raised letters vs ceramic lettering.

no running 17inch wheels. they are certainly larger calipers than the std s2/non m030 turbo calipers. the first set with the smaller pistons were also running with 928s4 discs so are 100% the larger caliper. just trying to work out why one set has larger pistons?

they are both medium blacks, just wondering why they have different size pistons.

thanks

I think the 993 may have had the same calipers at the rear with smaller pistons, the 928s4 calipers will fit under 16 wheels the big blacks (928GTS) do not. There are plenty pics of the calipers online you could compare to.

Don't know what the answer to this is,but I have a couple of sets of calipers lying around and the difference is in the piston size. All the medium blacks I have are identical except for the pistons.I have large piston flat lettering on the front and smaller piston raised lettering on the back as I changed the fronts for larger piston ones although the old fronts had larger pistons than the rears.
So in short front - big pistons back = smaller pistons
calipers are same size.

found a useful thread here
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-964-993-technical-forum/384737-993rs-brakes.html

the part number i have posted is apparently a brembo casting number.

looks like the new brakes i have, are either late type 928s4, 968 clubsport, or 993 c2 or c4 n/a (all fronts) they are calipers made to run with 304x32mm discs which are what i have on the car. and they are def medium size calipers as they run the mid sized pads.

it is likely they are the same size pistons as the 968c/s m030 36/44. i will have to check with a vernier

right have done a bit more digging and had a closer look at the calipers today.

it turns out they both have the same pistons! 36/44 so 928 s4/ 968 m030/ 944 m030 calipers.

the only difference is the piston seals are different and make the pistons look smaller on one set than the other as the piston face is smaller and has a machined groove for the seal to sit in. the new set have much smaller piston seals which make the piston look larger. once the piston is pushed out the main piston body is the same diameter on both sets.

it seems that one set is an early set, the other a late set which have different seals! one set has 85/86 as part of the casting, the other set has 89 stamped into it. i take it this relates to the year of manufacture?

Early and late then? Equates to expensive to replace seals or really, really expensive to replace seals! [:D]

yes identified now as early and late. the late type are supposed to be the better brakes as they are cheaper to rebuild in the future. but the early ones i have have already been refurbed and so are as good as new and freshly powdercoated in red! so i will likely use these.

the late type calipers that were fitted to my car i have taken apart to inspect, and found 2 of the larger dust seals to have small splits. so i will require 2 seals part number 20.4872.48 (brembo number)

i will also require 8 of the grub screws that hold the plates in place.

i have split the calipers, removed the plates, removed a very small amount of corrosion from behind the plates (pads were still moving freely)

i will replace the split dust seals on 2 pistons and then these m030 medium blacks will be available for sale ready for use with no plate lift, new plate screws, and perfect dust seals.

just need to source the bits for a reasonable price, as the dust seals i have located on the brembo site, although only 11 euros each, they want 20 euros shipping! which is a joke

anyone know of a good place to source the dust seals as sensible price (only need 2, for the 44mm pistons )

thanks

have found porschecalipers refurb service who can supply the dust seals for £11 each and £5 postage which is a bit more sensible!

89 indicates manufacturing year. Older design used cast in Porsche texture. Newer design used painted one. 928 S4 calipers should have newer design dust seals. Brembo made lot of different variants for Porsche. For example 964 have same size front calipers like 951/S2/968 have. Pistons in 964 version are bigger in diameter but 944/968 pistons are taller.
