Which battery for S2

If you get it from Hellfrauds, then get the HB096, which is a big beast of a battery and for my car has completely eliminated the "slow cranking" I used to get.
This battery fills the compartment and is held in by the clamp bolted down at the far hole.
They also list the HB075, but in my experience this is not man enough for the S2 3l engine.

I had a Bosch Silver battery from Eurocarparts - 78 a/h IIRC. It was about £65, but that was 18 months ago.
Only confusing bit was that these are sealed batteries whereas my S has a vent tube (S2s too maybe?) which the handbook insists must be connected. It isn't and I haven't died from exploding batteries or asphixiation yet. I suppose battery technology has moved on a abit.

My Bosch 72 AH battery also has a vent tube.....it's not obvious where this should exit, but like David I haven't yet choked on the fumes. Interesting that John's 76 AH battery cranks well......mine's OK but lives on a trickle charger so it should be! I haven't yet done the earth cable check posted elsewhere. I suppose it's just fine so long as the ignition system's in good nick. It fires up first swing so far!

I have a Varta Blue Top in mine that I bought from Tayna, it's the same battery as a Bosch Silver IIRC (Varta make them for Bosch with a different case).
It cranks really strongly although like others have said the vent hole is at the wrong end. I must get round to sorting that out, I don't really want the fumes from my battery corroding the inside of my boot.
Edit: Graham; in terms of where it should exit look at where the drain tube for the nearside rear light exits and you'll see another rubber gromet next to it. Ordinarily the battery vent would be shoved into there.

i had problems starting my turbo when i first got it and put it down to lack of use for having to jump it quiet alot then realised that the battery was tiny.
I went to halfords and got the HB096 and starts first time every time even after a couple of weeks dormant and it has a 5 year guarentee!

Roflmaro. Got my battery from ECP. Took it home, would it fit? Took it back. Computer says "it fits". Saturday boy tries to fit it, Saturday girl laughs and says "we give them the same battery whatever they ask for and if they bother to come back we look for the proper one"

I tried everything else- cleaning earths, changing the starter motor, and it was fitting a big enough battery that made the difference. Same here fast cranking even after 2 weeks idle outside in cold weather! Now I just have to attend to the long list of other things wrong with my S2![
][8|]Interesting ... my battery is at least 2 years old (I have owned the car for two years) and I can't remember the brand.
A recent new alternator has helped the cranking speed on my S2 immensely, as did cleaning the earth points about 4 months ago.
I suspect that the whole 'slow cranking' thing is a product of general deterioraition of the electrical system. Improvement of any one part will improve the cranking speed ... I wonder how well an S2 with new battery, alternator, starter motor and clean earths (i.e. brand new) would crank?
