Where can I buy 944 parts (Newbie)

Hello, I recently purchased my first Porsche a 944. I always loved this car growing up a young teenager in the mid 80's, and due to affordability I managed to buy one from Ebay for £1500. The car needs a new timing belt kit, a water pump and a sump oil pump. I have scoured the Internet for the past 48 hours and I cannot find any parts. I live in London so I was hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Many thanks.
p.s Had a quote for £365 for the following work, Timing Belt Kit, Alternet belt and Lay/balance shaft belt from a local garage, not knowing anything about costings on 944's, would you say this is a fair price for the work?

Your local Porsche centre (OPC) - always call an OPC for a price
Exeter OPC
Bert Gear - Berlyn Services
Frazerpart
German Swedish & French
Euro Car Parts
Design 911

Avoid a company with a name which sounds like Pork Chop. Theyll mess you about and sell you stuff that you could have bought from your OPC for half as much.

Hi Georgey

Congrats on your first Porsche, life now begins..:)

I note you have listed both the water and oil pumps, although it can be prudent to change the water pump when doing the belts the oil pump on these cars rarely fails, is there a particular reason for changing the oil pump. If you were to buy both pumps from an OPC they would cost more than you paid for the car so be sure they are needed. £365 for the work listed is actually fairly cheap however there's nothing complicated about this job so if your happy with the garage concerned then should be ok.

Simon has given a good list of suppliers, I'd recommend trying an OPC first before going to other suppliers as some times they have a special price on old stock.

Thank you both PSH and 94 MAN for your quick reply. There is an oil leak under the engine and the mechanic investigating said I need to change the oil sump pump. I did see it myself and touched the are and the leak is pretty bad. I know it will cost me but to buy a 944 in pristine condition would cost me around £3K and beyond. Thanks for the advise again, I look forward to speaking to you both again.

An oill leak, in all probability, will be the front crank seal (for which you remove the oil pump drive).

They may be great, but Id say avoid your local garage, or, at the very least; get a quote from a specialist. I know one in the East idland who charges £35 per hour, so in many cases it can be cheaper to go to someone who really knows the cars /what he is doing - either through being cheaper, being familiar and therefore quicker, or knowing what really goes wrong.

I wouldnt take a 944 to a fellow down the road unless I was in the middle of a foreign country, without phone reception.

I agree fully with Simon, it's most probably the front crank seal which isn't to dear an item to change and a common fault on these cars. Either the mechanic doesn't know the car very well or worse still he does know the car well and how much extra it will cost to replace the pump, or perhaps he was referring to the fact already pointed out by Simon regarding where the seal is located, either way beware.

Simon

now that's funny.

Many thanks Gentleman. I will take your advise and take it to a specialist and have the problem checked properly, for your info nearest OPC to me is in Hammersmith, here's the pricing:

Water Pump
£351 Ex Vat

Oil Pump
£444 Ex Vat

Timing Belt (Main) £103 Ex Vat

I deffo need to change the water pump and timing belt as the car makes a high pitch pulley noise when I press the accelerator when driving or parked revving the car, which is really annoying me, the oil part, well I just hope it's the front crank seal.

You need a specialist. He will know whether you need a water pump or rollers. A timing belt and balance belt are best bought from a specialist such as Bert Gear. I realise that this appears to be contradicting my earlier post, but in your case OPC may not be the best - for other parts theyre certainly the best.

The water pump will be far, far cheaper from German eBay, just make sure that it is a new Lasso manufactured part. Theres very, very little chance that youll need an oil pump. The belts and seal (highly likely that you will need this) should cost under £350+ VAT for parts and labour Rollers and a waterpump will cost more. If someone else is doing the job and you want it done all in one go then you wont be able to wait the three days or so that the pump will take from Germany, but buying it isnt a bad idea if you know it hasnt had one.

Why not? Surely if they're as crap as you say, surely everyone should know it? they're not affiliated to PCGB are they?

Self-imposed censoring to make P.Mc.s life a little less stressed. Theyre actually far worse than I say, as I only ever say avoid them if you possibly can.

If you are having the belts done then the water pump should only cost £150-200 more to change whilst they are in there. I had the Belts, cam-cover Gasket and Water Pump done on mine (now 944man's!) for £500 all-in

Both myself and Rob Dimond bought water pumps from Rosepassion in france.Total inc delivery was £234 its a lasso pump and the service is very good.Squealing noises from belts etc usually means that the baelts are too tight esp the balance shaft belt.
as everyone else says for parts always try opc and avoid PS as they a v v expensive. You could always call Andrew at Promax for a quote to get you car fixed and a general health check.
