It took me well over a year of having my car to notice that the fuel flap did not lock. I assumed that someone had made the mistake of pulling the emergency release for it when thinking they were releasing the bonnet (probably at a time of a dead battery). Having identified it would mean taking off the OSF wheel, wheel arch lining and carbon canister to find out whether it was still there and working or broken, I bought another fuel flap actuator to save taking it apart once for investigation and once for repair.
Its now over two years of having the car and a couple of days back I finally got round to taking it apart. Wheel and liner were fine but one of the connections at the bottom of the carbon canister refused to come off. After a while I noticed I could disconnect the top of that hose and once off the car could see why it was not willing to come off. Years of dirt had got into the connector meaning it would not press in to release. I did manage to clear enough dirt out so it released making it easier to clean the rest of the dirt out to make refitting a bit easier.
And then to the original issue. I could see that the plastic pin was still there and could with a bit of persuasion be guided back through the hole it should have been in - and locking and unlocking showed it still worked. So, no need for the replacement actuator - just a guide rose required at a cost of 54p + VAT to keep it aligned so it locates in the fuel flap door. I decided to splash out on 4 replacement screws for retaining the wheel arch liner as they had felt close to stripping the heads when removing them. I collected them yesterday and as my invoice had already been printed I decided better of asking for a discount on the 137p total especially when told this was the cheapest parts sale they could remember.

Graeme
PS If anyone needs a fuel flap actuator (part 996.624.113.00) I've got one for sale.
