When brakes go bad . . .

On the way home from my parents yesterday I could hear a slapping noise coming from outside the car, it was niggling at me a bit so I pulled over to have a look to see if there was a piece of trim loose or something. There was nothing obvious but on closer inspection i saw this on the o/s:



The retaining clips were all absent somehow! Obviously I went back to my parents house and got some strong wire to retain the pins for the journey home in lieu of genuine parts.

Anyone had anything similar before?

(the slapping noise turned out to be a stone stuck in the tread of the tyre - I don't know what would have happened if it hadn't been there . . .)

Sorry cant see picture, but would guess you are referring to the bent wire clip that sometimes retains the slider pins and holds the low pad sensor wires in place.

The earlier cars didn't have them, relying on small R clips and as I have taken the pad sensors off the 2.7, I've removed them too and used R clips.

I've also seen the clip just held on by the sliders.
 
If I'd taken a better picture you should be able to see that both the slider pins have worked their way out by over an inch each! The wire retaining clip and both the pin retaining clips were missing (R-clips because they look like and R?).

What's the thinking on the pad sensors? (mine were disconnected when I bought it)
