I was thinking of getting a cheap 2nd-hand set of wheels to use for track days. Am I right in thinking that the wheels from any new-ish Porsche will fit ok (with spacers if necessary)? So basically would late 911/964/993/Boxster wheels be ok? What are the widest wheels that will be ok without fouling the bodywork?

As far as I am aware, it is only the early 944s that have problems with later wheels, this being due to the larger bearing housing on the front axle stubs of the originals.

I fitted 996 wheels to my 88 lux with no problems.

Again I may be wrong but, as I understand, genuine Porsche wheels have the rim width and offset cast as numbers either side of the valve stem. With such reference I can confirm my front wheels are 7" wide rims with 55mm offset (7 55) and the rears 9" wide also with a 55mm offset (9 55). These are 17" rims and looked the dogs parts on my Lux and now equaly good on the Turbot.

As a word of warning though, the Lux was more fun with the original wheels as it would slide more evenly under cornering. The big rears subsequently stopped a lot of oversteer and if anything made the car a bit too understeery for my liking. This is less of a problem with the Turbo and makes up for the understeer by giving more control at the back when the boost arrives.

Alan, I' ve just upgraded to Porsche Carrere 2002 5 spoke as below

Front: 18 x 8" . Pirelli P-Zero Rosso 225 40 ZR18 N4.
Rear: 18 x 10" . Pirelle P-Zero Rosso 285 30 ZR18 N4.

These fit with no fouling.

Many thanks for all the replies chaps, very helpful. I intend to keep my (mint) 15" teledials for normal road use, but figured that something with lower profile tyres would be handy for track days. I doubt I' ll go bigger than 9" (oo-er missus), but it' s useful to know what' s possible.
