What oil do you use in your 968?

I asked this question previously in the general discussion forum, but got no replies. Maybe get a bit more luck here?

Personally, I' ve always favoured Mobil 1 but my local OPC recommends Shell Helix Ultra and the specialist I take the car to likes GTX magnatec!

What' s the general concensus? (The car' s reasonably low mileage for it' s age - 52,000)

Just lurking, but anybody know a low cost source of Mobil 1 in SW London/ Thames Valley ?

Yes.

Carrafour in Calais.

The cost of the day trip will be well covered by the saving on the oil.
(Not to mention the wine & beer[8D])

I've read lots of posts on this and still i'm confused. I'm certainly going to use a fully synthetic but which one and which viscosity range i don't know. JZ Machtech, that seem to have a very good reputation, used to service it for the PO and the invoices said oil - SLX whatever that is and their web site suggestes that they would use Castrol. The independent people i'm using now specify Castrol RS, yet most posts i've read seem to go for Mobil 1.

eeny meeny....

I belong to various car and motorcycle forums, and the subject of oil, or to be more precise synthetic oil, must have occupied more attention than any other subject. It has also generated more heat than light, and an awful lot of half truths and cod science.

I used to use Mobil 1, until two things occured. A. it got hugely expensive, and B. they introduced various different weights which initially confused me. I then discovered Halfords own brand oil (which of course is made for them by a major brand) and started using that. At present I tend to use Halfords fully synth, or their part synth in the 968 and before that in my 924S, and I like it. Being modestly priced, I tend to change it more often as a result, and fresh oil is the best oil.

Last year I entered into a long debate by e-mail with one of the technical boffins at Mobil. It centred around whether or not I could use fully synth in my Harley (but that's another story). What I did learn was that the weight of oil that best suits your engine has a lot to do with the width (or narrowness) of the oil galleries in the engine, and that as a rule of thumb, the older the engine, the larger will be the oilways, and vice versa. The most modern "thin" oils work best in modern engines with narrow oilways and high pressures. To take a Harley V-Twin as an example, this runs on fairly low pressures, but a high flow rate through comparatively large oilways, so a heavier oil works best. Mobil have launched a version of Mobil 1 (in the USA only) in 20/50 weight, specifically for this task. To my great annoyance, they do not sell it in the UK.

The basic design of the 968 engine goes back to the 80's and the 944, so in my view it is not a particularly new engine, albeit not an antique like the Harley. Using this rationale, I stick to good quality synth, ot semi synth, but avoid the really low weight "thin" oils. I also read somewhere just the other day (in 911 World maybe) that the oil boffins reckon you should use a slightly heavier weight of oil as engines get older.

my OPC used Castrol GTX Magnetec in the time I had my 968 Sport (5 years + 45k)

As my current beastie drinks Mobil 1, I realise the price difference !

(an M3 owning colleague indicated he was paying c £17/litre for the oil for his beastie - so it could be worse!)

I use mobil motorsport 15/50 in my 944, the 0/40 stuff is too runny and gets out quickly, looking at the handbook this apears to be perfect grade until the temps get down to minus 10C.
I buy it from teeside autotech for approx £110 for 4x4litres delivered. In france I think it is 5/40, and yes there is an article in the current 911and PW,

The oil question is an interesting one as I am about to do a change for the first time.

Had a walk around Halfords as the range is wide, their on shelf manual says porsche recommend 10/40w for 944's no mention of 968 -- off to a bad start!

For the 944 it also said that 5/40w fully synthetic was an option for the 944 but that seems to confirm to me that the very runny 0/40w oils are less appropriate.

Very much like the idea of the Mobil 1 Motorsport oil mentioned earlier by the 944 owner at 15/50w -- quite pricey in Halfords at £33 for 4 ltrs -- but I am a sucker for good oil as I see it as cheap insurance.

Actually have not checked out how much oil is required, -------- have done now it is 6.5 litres and the owners handbook helpfully says it is 1.5 litres from min to max on the dipstick. On that basis with Mobil 1 Motorsport the oil cost per change is £50 ish.

I had my 944 S2 (67k) serviced this week at Porsche and they used ESSO Ultra 10 - 40. They said that was the best oil to use. Last year they used Castrol GTX Magnatec 10 - 40. Seems funny how they change brands in a years and say this is better than this!

My local independent (La Rose Porsche) have just told me that they recommend Magnatec 10W40.

My Sport's in for a 12K service tomorrow, so that's what I'll be running for a while. I'll report back when I've tried it out.
