What functionality is lost with a 981 PCM head unit replacement?

Hi Everyone, I've just taken delivery of a 981 Spyder that already has the head unit replaced (I have the original in a box as well). The new unit has CarPlay etc, so I was wondering what functionality I may have lost when the original unit was taken out.

Are there any specific integrations with the car that are 'must haves'?

My understanding is that you lose most of the content of the rightmost display on the dash, but no personal experience other than forum entries from folks wondering what should be there! If you use the lower right-hand stalk to step through the displays that should be there according to the manual (off the top of my head including vehicle (oil temp, water temp, oil pressure etc depending on how you have configured it), trip (3 different screens), g force, Chrono, map, tyre pressure, radio station etc, what have you got?

When you said it had had the head unit replaced I assumed (probably because I had just been reading a similar post by somebody else) that it had been replaced with a non-Porsche head unit. But on re-reading your post, you didn't say that. If it was replaced with a like-for-like Porsche head unit (perhaps with appropriate coding and with the addition of a 3rd party CarPlay card) then it should have been fine, which sounds like is possibly what you have.

I understand that all you lose is the Nav Map in the right hand display. i.e. when you used the generic Porsche head unit the navigation instructions were also posted in the right hand display as well as on the main screen. All other functions remain the same. I wouldn't worry if I was you. In my estimation and experience Car Play and Google maps is the best and most up to date navigation tool. However, if you want to re-install the original Porsche unit AND still have Car Play there are various third party upgrade options available to modify the Porsche unit.

Yes you’re right the new head unit is worth anything that I’ve not noticed I’ve lost yet 😀

I never did the change on my old 997 but this one is pretty good even if the head unit is a bare bones Android. No idea the make or model, doesn’t say on the box 🤷🏻‍♂️
