Whale tail & wing mirror on my SC - any experts out there?

Just out of curiosity I'm putting a post on here as someone mentioned it is a unusual spoiler on my 911SC (1980). Also there is no LH wing mirror, was this standard? I'm on the lookout for one if anyone knows where they can be bought.

Hi Keewee,

The all rubber spoiler was the 'sport' pack option for 1978-80 with the Turbo style (fiberglass - body colour & rubber lip) as the 'sport' pack option from 1981-83. Also it is quite likely that your car was only spec'd with one mirror as the passenger one was an option in 1980.

Mirrors can be found quite often on ebay, breakers or sometimes for sale on here.

Cheers
Dan.

Thanks for the reply. It also has the Bilstein shocks on which I gather was included with the 'sport' pack. Is there anyway to find out whether the car had this originally or added later - the car had a major makeover 5 years ago.

Not sure if there is a way of checking original supplied options in the UK, I know you can in the states. Does your car still have the options sticker? (Should be on the bonnet - underneath - may be long gone) If you have someone here may be able to decifer the option codes to say what your car was delivered with.

I would think that only having one mirror is probably original as I cannot see why anyone would go to the trouble to remove the passenger one if it was present, also of the spoilers available for the IB 911 the all rubber one is the least popular (people usually put earlier ducktails, turbo tails or later carrera 3.2 style tails on if adding one to the car) so I again would imagine that it was the original option - especially if your car has the bilstiens too it's sounds like you have a sports pack SC...

Dan is spot on with everything he says, just to reiterate - the passenger mirror is an option - the 'sport' pack includes Bilstein shocks, front and rear 'spoilers', rubber in your case and sport seats. The wheels are 6&7J X 16 with originally I think Pirelli P7s, anyone remember when P7s were 'state of the art'? Your car is totally original by the look of it, with the optional 'sport pack'.

Hi Keewee,

To further inform your curiosity, I hooked out the original invoice for my 81 SC Targa, which had the optional mirror from new. It cost £66 plus vat, which equates to about £200 or more at today's prices. For a mirror!? To be fair to Porsche though, it wasn't just any mirror; they did also have to run some wires into the car.

Actually the really eye-watering extra was the leather. £875. Sounds OK, but you could buy a whole fair-sized family saloon for 3 to 3.5k back then. Maybe even an Austin Princess! But to be fair to Porsche again, the seats don't look like they're getting on for 30 years old now. More like 65k miles / 10-12 years old, if that.

I wonder if there were 1000 times more Princesses sold in the UK than 911s in 81? I wouldn't be surprised if the survival rate was the opposite - i.e. if there were 1000 81 911s left, is there even one Princess? Haven't seen one for years. I guess you get what you pay for!
