WET FLOOR ?????!!

Just noticed i have a wet floor in both the rear footwells, rest of the car is totally dry, cant understand how its got there, anyone else suffer from this that can shed some light on where i should be looking please ?, cheers, Jinxy
 
Sunroof seal, drainage holes and pipes.

Was the car parked front down hill? Could check under the rear carpet, leaky lights can sometimes work its way under the rear carpet.
 
cheers for that, car was parked on level ground, if it was roof seals would the seats not be wet too ?, what am i checking on the pipes ? & where do i look ?, cheers, Jinxy

No. Water doesn't pour through the roof, but trickles down the most awkward to find routes!

Pop the roof out, or at least lift it up enough to see the four drain holes. Carefully pour water down each one, if it comes out under the car then you're OK. If they are blocked, don't go mad with airlines or blunt objects. The tubes are easy to detatch, and you don't want to do that! Nylon strimmer cable is ideal, gently poked down the tube to clear them.

Stick what car you have in your signature, it does help. If it's an early car then the battery tray rots, sending water through the bulkhead. On all cars it's common for aftermarket wiring for alarms etc. to be routed through holes that aren't sealed. Keep the front of the bulkhead clear of leaves etc., there are drain holes under the windscreen on both sides.

More rarely, water comes through the rear window seals. As mentioned, the rear lights should be sealed but often aren't if they are replaced, and the footwells can fill up.

It's not unheard of for the door drains to be blocked. This should be obvious, as the doors will be full of water, the door cards soggy, and water sloshing around.

Lastly, it's not unheard of for rust in the front of the sills and the floor to create holes that water can get in through.

Presumably, 1. they are connected and 2. not blocked by any dirt or leaf type obstruction.

These cars are quite well known to suffer from a wet rear footwell, or two. The reason for each side may be different (the footwells are separate obviously)

I spent months in search of a Near side leak. It turned out to be :
water from the front scuttle
drains into the A Post area
runs down the skin of the inner arch - (to exit in the wheel arch)
except someone has drilled a hole for an alarm in the A post
and then the alarm is removed by previous owner
and so I'm look ing for a leak caused by a 4mm hole buried in sound deadening which is wet (my clue as to the leak source)
so the water enters the car and runs down the A Post behind the bonnet release
onto the ledge of the inner sill where the wiring loom sits
and runs back along the ledge to the LHD handbrake recess
then runs down the sill onto the floor
and by now is back far enough in the car to collect in the rear footwell which is the lowest point.

I checked the sunroof drains on every 944 I've owned and never found one dirty never mind blocked.

Other sources, as mentioned - rear lamp unit to body seals
rear hatch pin drain units
rear hatch seal - note the body strip they attach to are angled so that capiliary action can bring in water
front windscreen bonding gaps - lower corners
sills, they "flood" if the drains are blocked by waxoyl

I have found the side windows to be leak free probably due to the vertical position, and a good big body flange in the rubber
Doors, similarly they are unlikely to be the cause IME

I start by pulling the passenger seat, carpet, sound deadening, - dry all out with a towel, dust with talcum powder and wait for rain. The drips will leave a snail like track in the powder.

Thanks for the advice guys, ok my car is an 89 Lux, the car has never been messed with, so the rear lights have never been out, both rear latch pin drain tubes are present & in place, i checked when i replaced both latch pins & gaskets after cleaning out the old grease from the latches themselves & re-greasing them, boot area is very dry, front carpets & footwells are also very dry, will check the roof drain tubes once the ground is dry enough to tell if its rain water or water im pouring down the tubes. Is roof seal deteriation very common on our cars ? ive seen the horendous price of the seals on ebay... are they really that expensive ? or is it seller price hike ? easy to fit or an involved job ? i dont seem to have a lot of luck with water in cars, i have a 1989 Toyota MR2 T-Bar which also leaks, even though ive spent hundreds of £'s on it... they even leaked when new !!... so im hoping that i dont have the same problem here[:eek:] if i still cant find the answer i may ask one of you if you mind having a look when im at the next Ace cafe meet in London if any of you are going, cheers, Jinxy
