was in the same position as you earlier this year, did get plenty of thoughts from people about what to do.

firstly, what do you consider to be high mileage? as in the opinion of many Porsche engineering is so robust that providing the vehicle has been looked after and not thrashed to death, mileage is almost immaterial.

secondly, whilst full FPSH is nice (the car i eventually bought had it) what does seems to matter most is that it has been serviced properly. yes, my own was good but i have since found out that the fuel filter canister had never been changed in almost 100,000 miles -- so even FPSH has its catches!!

thirdly, what is your budget? (should be first!) as that can vary from around 7k to over 20k

so what did i do?

I found Autotrader and Exchange & Mart a very good starting point, lots of vehicles with different histories and prices all available now. Did prefer the private ads but in the end found a non-specialist dealer (from Autotrader) who had one from a trade in.

PCGB mag was not as helpful as I would of expected, not many cars and is outdated by the time it arrives.

www.968.net does sometime have some UK cars but only occasionally

these last 2 do seem to have more than the usual levels of optimism with pricing -- this also happens in Autotrader etc but there are others in those titles that seem much more reasonable.

final piece of advice, if you do not know the mechanicals of these cars then paying for a specialist to check it out is really a must -- best thing to do is scour the web and PCGB for a specialist near the intended purchase cost about £150 for a couple of hours + vat (or pay more for one of the mobile guys about £225, if i remember correctly)

happy hunting

Sound advice Paul.

Autotrader web site is probably the best and most up to date place to look.

Aim to pay between £11k and £13k private and between £13k to £15k at a respectable trader. Any more than this is too much (unless it is an exceptional car) and frankly any lower and you should ask some searching questions.

Known weak points are the gearbox pinion bearings (though not as common a problem as is suggested) and the condition of the cam teeth/chain. Both of these are covered in great detail on www.968.net, search the archives.

Otherwise I agree with Paul that condition and history are more important than mileage, and if possible buy from a knowleagable owner, rather than one who simply puts his/her faith in the "full Porsche service history", which is frankly nothing much more than a series of very expensive oil changes.

Cheers

Rob,

When I was looking for mine, I had a list of websites to trawl through daily, and if you're patient, cars will eventually turn up! As I spend my day in front of a computer anyway, it was no problem to click down the list over a sandwich at lunchtime.

There are quite a few 968s available on the list below, and autotrader allows you to set up a specialised search which makes it simple to display your chosen make/model.

My list is below, but I'm sure there are many others that I missed.
