VDO Odometer Gear - UK supplier?

Hi Folks,

I've had a look through the various posts and found out about this problem so pulled out my instrument cluster and confirmed it's the gear that's stripped.

Only thing is though, the only suppliers for the gears seem to be in the USA, the cheapest I've found is about $40 including postage, which just seems ridiculous for a tiny plastic gear!

Does anyone know of a UK supplier?

Or failing that, are there a few people who'd like to club together, maybe get a better deal and save on the postage? Let me know if you're interested and if there's enough I'll email the various US suppliers and see what they can do.

Cheers,

Doug

No, it's the round dash from later 1985.5 on models, which have the electronic speedo.

That said, most of the suppliers I've looked at do the mechanical speedo gears too so if I do get a batch order I can maybe get a few of them too.

I cant remember the company name but it wasn't from the UK. I bought mine from the US and delivery was excellent.

Yes I probably need one although I've not taken out my instrument cluster yet. I've never quite understood why an electric speedo needs a mechanical part in the odometer? I've an 86 . So yes I'll consider a joint or multiple purchase! PM me if interested. I'm not even going to look at till the summer.....

Because a mechanical drive is converted to an electronic signal using a hall-effect sensor at the transaxle: and then converted back to a mechanical drive within the instrument cluster, in order to drive the analogue speedometer and odometer.

Hi Folks,

Well there hasn't been an overwhelming response so I won't try for a group buy.

I'll share my research though!

Most companies charge between $25-30 for the actual gear and postage to the UK that I've found out off the various suppliers is as follows:

Pelican parts
$34.25

Rennbay
$12

Paragon
Stupidly expensive!

Odometer gears
$4

Vertex Auto
$36.96

Eagleday
$15.99

Zims
$25

Southern Electronics
$10

So I'll be placing my order with odometergears.com, who also seem to have the lowest price for the gears at $25.

Doug

US$21 postage then, if Ive understood correctly? Id ask then to send it for $12 max, and thats a lot more than standard postage would cost (by about ten dollars). Considering the low item value its a perfectly reasonable request: and expecting you to pay $21 is ridiculous.
