Upgrading to a newer model but what’s it worth?

Happy new year all! I hope this post finds you all well.

Over the past 6 months I have been considering selling my 2001 986 in the hope to replace it with a newer model but until it’s sold I can’t commit to a new one as I don’t know what money my current car will bring.

is it unreasonable to ask for advice on what my current 986 might be worth here in the forum before putting it up for sale? I have no idea what to list it for and as it’s an older vehicle I’d steer clear of we buy any car valuations as they can’t put a fair value on these cars.

If it’s ok to do so I’d like to pop some pictures up and some details before creating the add in the sale section.

I bought my 2001 986 3.2S with 73,000 miles nd new MOT in September for £3,000 if that helps.

3k wow you did really well there I didn’t know you could get them for that money With less than 100k miles well done Good find.

For starters an outline description would be useful - base or S, mileage, service history and general condition … tyres, brakes, body and interior.

I’d have a look online [Autotrader, PistonHeads, etc.] to see if you can find a car similar to yours to get a feel for current prices.

great So details as follows:

[ul][*]65,000 miles[*]bodywork is fantastic with no rust, no dinks, no scratches[*]wheels have been refurbished but tyres on The front prob down to 3-4mm[*]interior trim in very good condition no rips or damage.[*]good service history from main dealer and specialists[*]IMS bearing replaced by Parragon.[*]recent new brake pads, discs are good.[*]booked in for oil service and plugs with Porsche specialist next week or so.[/ul]I’ll add some pictures shortly…

I had the same dilemma a few months ago about my beloved 2004 986.2 / 2.7

whether to sell on the Club website. The Club valuation some time ago was £7.5k, which was £500 more than the purchase price in March 20 from a dealer. Used car prices have been going through the roof for quite a while now, but as mentioned earlier you can’t do a ‘webuyanycar’. Boxster prices are also well up, although of course it’s all relative to what you want to buy. I wanted to upgrade to a 987 2.7 and eventually found one with the spec and colour I wanted (Atlas grey) with cruise control, PASM, extended leather, Sony car play unit, bi-Zenón headlights & washers, 68k miles and managed to agree the same valuation on trade-in.

Anyway, that’s my story, good luck with yours, it looks a really well-kept model

I had the same dilemma a few months ago about my beloved 2004 986.2 / 2.7

it is a very similar situation and I think many others have been through the same. You certainly get a lot more gadget for your money on the upgrade I just want to make sure I get a fair price.

I paid 7500 for the car in 2018 and since then it’s been dry stored, tucked up over the wet winter months and only covered 2400 miles under the warmth of the sun Since I bought it.

I would sell the hardtop separately as it wont add much to the resale value and these sell all the time for around £500. Your car seems a well looked after example and as such you should have no issue achieving £6-8k if you sell in May to get the premium for the summer market
