Tyres for standard sized 944 rims ?.

Hi Guys, all four tyres will need replacing soon on my 944, im running the standard teledials with 215/60/15 w rated on the front & 225/60/15 w rated on the rear, all four current tyres are Pirelli P6000 but looking at the replacement price £200 - £250 each is way past what I want to pay & some of the other recommendations for tyre makes don't seen to be offered in the sizes that I need, so can anyone recommend good all round tyres in my sizes for around the £90 - £120 each range please, if it includes fitting & balancing that would be a bonus too, Many thanks, Jinxy

I had p6000's on mine and all it wanted to do was spin up in the wet!! I've got Eagle F1's on it now and the grip is so much better in the dry and wet

Check camskill for tyre prices they seem to be the cheapest

Excellent, this is the sort of info I need, thank you !, yes I had Eagle F1's on my MR2 & only stopped using them because they stopped doing them in 14", but what an awesome tyre they are, ok will check out prices now, cheers, Jinxy
forgot to mention, my P6000's spin alarmingly in the wet too [:-]

Correct original/sizes are either 195/65/15 or 215/60/15 (185/70/15 on very early cars). On four original 15" x 7" wheels I would choose these: http://www.camskill.co.uk/m53b0s289p111125/Vredestein_Tyres_Car_Vredestein_Sportrac5_Vredestein_Sportrac_5_-_205_55_R15_88V_TL_Fuel_Eff_%3A_E_Wet_Grip%3A_B_NoiseClass%3A_2_Noise%3A_70dB

I wouldnt fit silly mismatched size tyres - the 215s are already wider than the car needed and the 225s will only spoil the cars handling.

Ah, so Simon are you saying they should be 195/65/15 on the front & 215/60/15 on the back or all one size all round ? my car is a 2.7 1989, just ever so slightly confused now LOL

these vredestein are a really good buy, if you want to spend a bit more hankook evos are getting good reviews just now I have them on my 3 series and they are very good. You shouldnt need to pay more than £80 per corner for good tyres on those rims.

Standard 195/65/15 and option 215/60/15. Either / or but whichever size you go for you need four of the same size. Even the cars which had staggered sizes (Turbos and then S2s too, which also came with different width wheels) don't need them and are better with the same size tyres on every corner.

Toyo proxies ? Always get a mention as being very good in this price bracket so
Im suprised they havnt here. Mind you on checking, I see they have gone up a bit.. Personally if you could get good year in that price
Bracket it would be job done for me.

My first turbo had budgets on when I got it ........ oh deary me was it obvious :(

Just what Simon says. I run 205/60/15 Vredesteins and rate them very highly.

For winter and rallying I've got another set of wheels with 195/65/15 Yokohama W.Drive winters. Also excellent.

How many miles do you plan on covering?

The Michelins on my Turbo are great, and seem to last a while (something I have noticed on other cars as well (they are about the only tyre where I can get 30k out of the fronts, soon paying for themself on a daily driver)), but they are pricey.

Contis do not last as long but they seem to be slightly quieter and grip well. Goodyears are also a good shout. Vredesteins seem to be fine in the Sportrac and Sessenta formats :).

With the exception of the CF1 tyres on my 205, I have not driven a car on with Proxes where I have thought 'they are amazing' and I have driven a few cars with the fabled T1Rs on. On a previous car of mine where the previous choice of tyres seemed to last a while, the T1-Rs did not even cover 7,000 miles before they were illegal, and I did not drive like a clown either. Then again, many people seem to be satisfied with them.

For good midrange tyres I would recommend Kumho KU31's, Falken FK453's, Hankook Evo V12's - I have ran all of these on performance cars without dramas. I quite liked the Hankooks's when I had them on my 182, we also have them on the front of the S2k - although the s2k boys think the sidewalls are a bit soft.

Uniroyal Rainsport 2's often get good reviews, but I have not tried them myself.

When the S2000 needs new boots I am going to try the Dunlop Sport Maxx I think.

T1-Rs suit lighter cars, I think. Great on an MX-5, but they dont suit everything. Uniroyal Rainsports are avalable for a similar price, but theyre a bit dearer and I could only find 50 series in the width that I was suggesting.

I ran T1-R's on my Eunos and found them to be OK, a bit soft and once old they do go off a bit - but then I suppose a lot of tyres have that problem.

I really liked the FK452's I had on the back of our 330ci, they gripped well and lasted well, not too bad in wet/snow either. Put some FK453's on the front but didn't have the car long enough after that to get an idea, sidewalls looked softer on the 453 which is good if you prefer comfort over sharp turn in!
