I have seen some posts regarding going to the 285/30 on the rears, is this okay to do so on a 1999 MY C4 ?

Allan,

The car was already fitted with 18" Sport Design Wheels which I believe are GT3 wheels ?

Which are 10J x 18 H2 on the rear and 7.5J x 18 H2 front, but the handbook states 265/35 on 18" where as I believe they went to 285/30 the following year ?

The rims can certainly accomodate the tyres but I do not know about clearance to the arches, the silencers, suspension etc.

The GT3 has no rear seats and very firm suspension which is 30mm lower than stock 996, so it rides & behaves differently to a stock [softer]996. I would certainly consult an independant like 9m or similar to ask if this has been done, try not to be the guinea pig

Can I ask a question here. Personally I find the ride of my 996 C4 too firm already with 18" 265 tyres plus I understand that whilst wider tyres are good in the dry this is not the case in the wet or on ice etc. So the question is why fit wider tyres? I have seen some forums advise to fit 17" wheels for normal road use - something I am tempted to do. Would I notice any real benefit in terms of ride and less noise?

I asked the question last week but didn't get much response (18" v 17")

I read at PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA in the technical section that 17" is much better than 18" for normal road use

I put 285 Bridgestone S02's on my 1999 C2 and did approx 12,000 miles including 3 track days. I had no problems at all, it did improve the look of the car I think.
