Tyre choice

Just got the car through its MOT only needed headlights aligning done there and then very nice man. Warning notice about rear tyres getting low. At present I have Bridgestone SO1s on the back and SO2s on the front which are nearly new I guess the SO1s must be pretty old. I enquired in Canterbury where I normally get my tyres and they quoted me £115 each all in for SO2s which they say they can still get is this a good price as I would like to have the car on the same tyres all round.
More worrying though the MOT picked up on B post rot and some rot up under the rear wheel arches I have not had a good look yet but does anyone know of a good body shop with Porsche experience in Canterbury Kent area.

Cheers Baz

Certainly would recommend the Bridgestones, good all round tyre.

Your car is pre requirement for N rated tyres (N0 came in in early '90's), but the main difference is a stiffer sidewall.

However, for your use and with respect that tyres should be changed every five years, the cheaper ones may be a better option.

I wouldn't recommend 9" rears and 245s for your car. Even if yours is a 204 bhp SC, you would be over-tyring it.

The main disadvantages would be increased rolling resistance, a bumpier ride and a lot more understeer.

Best options would be 6s & 7s or, perhaps 7s & 8s, with 205/55s and 225/50s. Stretching the widths will make the side walls stiffer. The theory is that the car will be more responsive but less progressive.

The Kumhos and Toyos both get good reviews on Pelican, have a read of this thread on their 911 board. Have Falkens on mine at the minute but radius arm bushes and therefore alignment all over the place at present (until next month) so can't comment on how good they handle!

They are getting old too though so will replace them once I some these 8 inch Fuch's for the back. Probably gonna go Falken again as they have a nice tread with a bit of a rim protector, they are certainly wearing well on the front and there is a link to some fairly good prices in PP this month.

Wondered who was quoting you £300 on Kumhos Dan? You can get a set for about £210 from xpedia tyres in Buckingham, carriage is £16 and then get your own people to fit should cost no more than £30/35. I hope you'll let us know how you get on with whatever you choose in the end.

cheers, JG

I got a set of Goodyear Eagle F1's from Protyre. I'm not an expert but I'm really impressed by them. I took the car on a trackday on one of the stormiest and wettest days we had last year in November. I was expecting the worst but the grip was phenomenal.

Can't praise Protryre highly enough either. Great price and a very good service. They used hand tools and a trolley jack - first checking with me that I was happy with the placement and torqued the nuts to the correct amount. Can't see that happening at KwikFit.

I have 17x7.5 and 17x9 rims shod with Khumo Ecstas 215/45 and 225/40 profile. The grip and handling has never been better. I can feel the understeer and use it better than ever before too. I'd be tempted to try 245/40 on the rear in future. for now I think the 'Ecstas' are a performance bargain.

I have just ordered 2 X 225/50 ZR 16 Bridgestone SO-2 N3 rating at £110 all in each I have gone for these as I have got good SO-2s on the front and I like having the same tyres all round. Should be fitted Thursday.

Thanks to all who have advised me, I have now ordered a set of Kumho Ecsta 712's and should have them fitted later this week. Xpedia tyres were indeed the cheapest I could find (thanks John), I will let you all know how I get on with them.

Cheers Dan.[:D]

Cool, looking forward to hearing what they are like mate as will be doing the same once I find these 8 inch Fuchs for the back. Xpedia are great, use them all the time and they have always been number one on price.

If you ever go there to collect (they don't fit as they are just a warehouse) they use a mobile guy to fit and he is easily the best tyre fitter I have ever used - brilliant.

Well an update as promissed...

Xpedia were excellent, good service, good prices delivered in 2 days from order!

Tyres now fitted to wheels and back on car, tyres look the part, the tread pattern is excellent in my opinion (I shall see how well it performs) and I particularly like the Rim Protector edge (Not that I ever curb my wheels of course!).

On inital driving the car feels a lot smoother than before (the old tyres were very worn) and the grip & handling appears to be far better (in the dry any how) and the tyre roar seems to be less than the old dunlops that were on the car.

I haven't really driven any great distance yet so I will post again later once I have given them a fair crack of the whip!

So far well pleased with the result[:D]

Have had the SO-2s fitted today look and feel nice but have not given them any stick yet bed them in first. Have read lots of different things about tyre pressures what do we recommend the tyres are 205 and 225 on standard Fuchs.

Has anyone had any experience with track tyres?
I will be changing mine this week (see pic) and have been thinking about a second set of wheels/tyres for track work, I saw Colway Traxtar mentioned in a few other posts.

Idly flicking thru Autoexpress from last year at my chiropracters yesterday, they did a wet and dry tyre test and Goodyear came out top, Bridgestone S03 bottom.

BAZ -try 36 cold all four.

Cor Mel, you at chiropractors yesterday, me at osteopaths, right pair of crocks! Whatever they say about a 911's flawed ergonomics (and not that I agree in the slightest), I can't blame my car for torn muscles, practising pirouetting in the kitchen with the girls did it for me!

Get well soon - lol

Kevin,
Re. Colway Traxtars. I've only done one day on mine but they seem to do the job pretty well and at £40 a corner they've got to be worth a try. I think they will improve considerably once they've worn down a bit. Good luck finding a set of track wheels, it's not easy as I discovered !

Its a funny old world! Had my two fronts changed this week (along with a new clutch). I went with the recommednation of the mechanic who looks after my car, never having heard of the make before. After reading your message I thought I'd check and lo and behold, a pair of Khumo Ecstas! I have to agree with you - the level of feedback is excellent, especially compared with the ageing and perished Avons which were replaced.

I'm now busy trying to scrub down the rears (Avons) to minimum so that I can get Ecstas on there too.

DON'T MIX MAKES!!!

Can lead to some VERY peculiar handling characteristics....
