[FONT=verdana,geneva"]I have recently purchased my first Porsche, realising a childhood dream. The car is as old as my driving licence which seemed apt and luckily for me means I have a 993 C2 coupe.
I brought the car primarily for my honeymoon which will involve 2 months driving / camping around Europe (it was my girlfriends idea, the 993 was mine) However in order to convince my future wife it was the correct vehicle to use I promised we would get a roof rack for a roofbox to fit all her stuff. It is proving difficult to find a solution, does anyone know of one. At the very least i owe it to her to try.
I am not worried about having to restrict speed between destinations as long as I can remove it at each stop off.

In Tequipment catalogue Porsche used to sell roof bars for a 993 described as 'Load carrier system for 911 Coupe' (part no. 993 801 055 00).

If you can find one you should be able to mount a roofbox to them.

Alternative, try adapting a Thule roofbox system which is good gear available from Halfords or try www.roofbox.co.uk

Think you will struggle to find an original one but it will hopefully give you an idea on how to use something else off the shelf.

With some carefull planning you'll be amazed what you can actually get inside the car.

I do the trip to Le Mans each year with OH and manage to get:
  • All her gear, including all her shoes!
  • All the kit for marshalling the event (Overalls, boots, waterproofs etc)
  • 6-man ten
  • Inflatable bed. And pump, And Quilt!
  • My gear!
  • Electric Coolbox
  • Cooker
  • All the regular camping stuff

Oh, and a top box on a 911 is not cool.....

ETA But 2 months is a long time...
 
I did quite a bit of searching for the original roof bars a couple of years back before a trip to Spain with our bikes on roof. Phoned several helpful people in German OPCs but everyone was a case of "we did have one until recently". Anyway eventually I got lucky and was offered a second hand one. I recommend posting in the "wanted" section on here and see if you can get lucky yourself because the real thing is a beautiful piece of engineering. However the Thule one mentioned above will work (the option that lets you buy different length legs for front and back).

However, when doing the investigation I also learned that Porsche don't recommend a roof box (perhaps from memory they don't recommend a full-width box) - this is because it hinders airflow to the engine intake in the rear spoiler. So you might want to take this into account. This was from one of the guys in Germany. Skis and bikes are fine! But like you said you can keep the speed down! (perhaps)

My method of cutting down girl-luggage is to say "I'll give you twice as much baggage allowance as flying" - that way she feels she is being given an advantage from taking the car!

It's a great car for long distance travel.
 
Yup, I'd avoid an 'add on' too.
I've done 11 days camping around France, Monaco, Italy, Germany, Austria in 1999 in a Boxster (with tent, sleeping bags, the lot) for our honeymoon.
I've done a week tour in a 964C4 cabrio, in the UK, with wife and 2 small daughters.
Done a long week, 2500km tour as far as Devon, via Paris, with the wife & the same 964 had plenty of room.
Perfect car for long distances and certainly much nicer to drive on the mainland.
I recently did 1300km in 27hrs in the 993, a quick trip with overnight stop, to collect some bits from the UK.
Marvellous car !
Call in to Luxembourg if you're near.....nice roads, cheap petrol & other 993 addicts there too [:D]

Thank you for all the replies and useful information.

We have just spent 10 days in Cornwall and although we didn't camp we had to take loads of stuff and it all fitted in a treat, the outcome of which is we have agreed there is no need for a roof box.
However I did find a company in Canada who tailor their parts to create the solution to your car www.yakima.com/shop/racksystems/ they have some good ski racks which i will probably purchase, but for the honeymoon the car will be driven as intended which is great news.
