TQ: Starting Problems

Hiya, I'm having starting problems I wondered if you could help:- when ignition key inserted switch to position 2 all dash come on correctly. 50% of starts to position 3 engine starts normally other times key to position 3 .... nothing , no click no dimming of dash lights. repeat operation with key 2-3 times starts normally. The problem started occurring only odd times now happening more frequently. No works has been carried out to the electrics recently, only work has inolved in replacement of head gasket & head rebuilt. Any suggestions?? Regards Phil Carr

Paul this could be one of three things.
A burnt/worn out ignition switch. It isnt a big deal to remove it and dab the position three terminal on to the infeed cable to see if the starter kicks.

A worn out solenoid
Brushes in the starter motor worn down to their limit.

The first test cost nothing, and if it rules out the switch my advice is to fit a reconditioned starter, which has the sloenoid attatched. Dont even think about going to an OPC for the motor. An OPC solenoid is nearly the cost of a complete aftermarket unit There are many good aftermarket ones, and I particularly recommend Porscheshop in Halesowen. They are supplying the valves for the turbo and as far as I can see they have supplied OE parts, going by the manufacturers logo on both sets of components. If you are paying for the remedial work then expect to pay for about 90-120 minutes labour. The 924 starter is tucked away behind some nifty heat shields, and these simply have to come out of the way to change the unit, and there is an absolute "B" of a set screw in the engine mount securing one of the heatsheilds.
