top mounts - now very expensive!!

I recently enquired about top mounts for my '91 turbo. The prices I was quoted are:

Standard top mount - £244.19 each + VAT
MO30 top mount - £647.67 each + VAT

I have the M030 suspension on my car but am loathed to pay these prices!

Can anyone recommend suitable substitutes?

Although they are motor sports parts, I think KW top mounts are not as expensive so is that a suitable alternative?

Racers Edge do adjustable top mounts - I think Lindsey Racing stock them or something similar.

Providing that you arent competing in your car, where adjustment and different bearings are forbidden, then theres quite a selection available.

KLA used to be the cheapest and they can be bought here from Simon at ASR (simon986 on eBay). GAZ are probably a better proposition since the exchange rate collapsed, with their adjustable mounts coming in at under £200 for the pair, I believe.

I'm definitely not competing!

With top mounts, are they all pretty much the same? I.e. am I getting a lesser product if I buy the cheapest option rather than the more expensive option?

Are these the ones you mean?

Presumably there is no compatibility issues with these and KWv3 or KWcs?

I also found these but they are more expensive the the GAZ option and I'm not sure if they're worth the extra money?

How much does these affect the harshness and noise of the car?
It's a very solid connection so to speak :)
Good point. I wonder if anyone has either of these products and can offer feedback??

You can get a reconditioned pair in germany or maybe even send yours to be reconditioned http://www.ebay.de/itm/1-Paar-aufgearbeitete-Domlager-mit-Gegengewichten-fur-Porsche-944-S-S2-Turbo-968-/290823098575?pt=DE_Autoteile&hash=item43b66850cf

Just another note - many of the aftermarket top mounts will raise the front of the car - not a problem if you have height adjustable front suspension, but an issue on standard struts.

Yes, the rule of thumb way to tell, is by looking at them in-situ. If they protrude through the hole in the inner wing then they wont lift the car, but if theyre all below the metalwork then they will.

Gaz are £180 + carriage + VAT, so will be closer to £240 I guess

My thread on TIPEC recently http://forums.tipec.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=14078

Personally I like the look of the Ground Control units as they mount on top of the turret and therefore maximise shock travel on a lowered car. All others that mount under the turret will reduce travel due to their depth. My 924 is lowered by 65mm so I need all the travel I can get!!

I dont doubt that youre right! I mean that when they were introduced, in 2009 I think, they were '£150' and I presumed that this quoted price was excluding VAT.

The S2 (and apparently non M030 turbo) uses the latest improved mount which were priced (in Canada - 3 years ago) about C$780 or about £550. So even the new style "standard" mounts are very expensive. If someone is quoting you that low price for standard mounts I would suspect they are giving you a price for the pre-89 mount. According to my '91 PET the part numbers are:

951 343 018 30 for M030 mounts
951 343 018 04 for "standard" mounts

I've been told that aftermarket or adjustable mounts do increase noise and ride more harshly and as advised by others in this form - most of them increase front ride height by 1/2" or more. http://www.klaindustries.net/ offer a mount (US$250 - I believe that is a pair) that maintain factory ride height. Probably too expensive to ship, etc but they have good photos on their site for comparison to European alternatives....

Out of curiosity - why are you looking at new ones - obvious wear or just considering for maintenance purposes?

Bruce, are you certain that the KLA mounts dont lift the front?

OP, theyre the mounts I suggested which can be bought from Simon at SAR.

More maintenance than anything else. The car has almost 180k miles! I think a suspension overhaul is long overdue and want to address all suspension related parts in one hit.

I may be overdoing it but would rather do that than do a half job.

I sourced used std mounts from a low mileage car, cleaned and relubed the bearings with HD grease.
No point getting new mounts IMO, on most broken cars the rubber on the mounts should still be in reasonably good condition.

I replaced mine with gaz ones. My car is on coil overs so now sure about road noise increase. Car felt a lot tighter after replacing them car had 115k on it so old ones were bound to have been a bit worn.
