time for a change?

hiya,,not been about for a little while,,lots of family stuff,,dad gone 2+ years ago,mum recently diagnosed with vascular dementia,both parents only 70years old, brother in law with stage 4 cancer so not had much time for my s2 but after just replacing our daily driver or wifes car


























with a newer car,,it now has made me start to think maybe time for a change and a different porker might be the answer,,i still have the chance to buy my specialists 3.2 89, 911 but still have an itch for a 968.i would have bought chris hazells but the time wasnt right back then but still think i missed out with that car or the prices for 996s with rms sorted and gt3 aerokits for silly money for a very nice one,
i am a bit undecided and have to make sure i making the right decision and not a knee-jerk reaction to counteract my family probs,,
i do love my s2 but i am starting to slighly itch, lol,our daily driver is a mk5 5 door r32,manual, cheap to insure plus 4 wheel drive,,any ideas or pointers much appreciated,,regards jason p l
 
Hi Jason welcome back. Firstly may I say that you mental resillience is commendable; I hope you come out of the other side of your emotional turmoil unscathed.
With an R32 as a daily driver few things will put much of a smile on your face. I am a bit keen on the 996t myself having bought one a year ago. Ok this one was 2004 with full spec and 17,800 miles on it, but for strong 3.2 SC money you could look at something like a 996 t with 33,000 like the first one I found on auto trader for 18,950. The turbo block is based on the GT1 engine as found in the 959 and does not suffer the RMS issues associated with the 3.4 and 3.6 normally aspirated engines due to its different design. (to be fair RMS and IMs failure only affect about 5% of total normally aspirated engine production world-wide) Four wheel drive and far less tail happy but watch out for those 420 ponies.

Absolutely, 997 with variable vane geometry on the turbo , but the gentleman mentioned 3.2 sc in his commentary so I suggested something in his theoretical price range.
 
oop...my bad :), but in all honesty...if one "can" afford to run one , that will be the choice as the 996TT is a little dated now, and the SC even more so(if the lottery numbers comes in then the new 911T is the choice) .

that will be my choice of car when I next change

That's my problem, and luckily I'm too skint to be able to follow up on any temtations. This was flagged up on Twitter today, and I have a very local LR specialist who sorts our Legacy and my van. It would be mad for me not to buy it, and if I had the cash in the bank I'd be there tomorrow.....[&:]

Cars are just too cheap now. It's really hurting the mid-range classics like ours, as you can buy a modern sports car for the price of a service on a 944.[:eek:] Reading the PH guide to the RX8, with some decent ones at around £2K, and i now want one of them as well!.

For that money, you could have bought 10 decent RX8s, thrown away the worst 9 of them, and still had money in the bank. That's how crazy the car market is!

My friend's M5 has lost nearer £40K, and in that time it's been in the dealer as much as he's driven it. Without a warranty it's pretty much scrap, but it's sooooo tempting when the V10 is flat out!

As is a client's DB9 for c. £30K with only 11K miles on it. Or another's Continental with low miles that he sold for under £30K.....


 
I actually "lost" less ££ on my previouse car (E60 M5) as i bought it second hand , ran it for a year then trade it in for my M3, the lost was around £2K which is very good on this type of car [:)]was a bargain as well ...just serviced , all brake disc and pads changed , new gearbox and clutch, new tyres all round.

tried to sell to friend and family ....but no one had £20K+ cash to spare , that is why these type of car are always traded in .
very much a buyer's market , so unless one is desperate ...not ideally a time to sell .
 
The only car I have ever sold was my 1987 944s in around about 1997. Advertised for 7,800 in 1994 bought for £7,500 (bizarrely the vendor knocked himself down 300 quid) so who was I to argue? I had some minor scratches in the off-side C pillar repaired, inflicted by the gorse bushes on the A322 when I went passive rally crossing along the central reservation after hiiting black ice. Sold to a very satisfied and happy friend for £7,000, who still spoke to me after six months of ownership proving I didn't stitch him up.

hiya all,,,, bighead,,when i was looking to buy our new daily driver, a trader friend said that the newer m3s could be had for 16-17 grand trade,up on miles but still,, i thought he must be off in his prices but what your saying kinda backs him up,,thats shocking,,heard they are juicy but so much car for so little money,,as much as love my s2,it so very tempting,,996 c4 around 70,000,rms attended,g/red with factory fitted gt3 aerokit with gt3 wheels,last owner 10 yrs for 12 grand???,,zm coupes,mazzer cambio-corsas,,etc etc,,very tempting,,regards s2
 
Yes jasonp...my car loses near £800 amonth from new ....these type of cars a bargain right now , although they are tempting bear in mind that it a £50K+ car with the running cost to boot, mine was listed @£64K and i paid £58K after some haggling, if you dont do huge mileage then it ok ,but if you do then it'll cost big time as mine average 16.6 mpg around , but I only do around 3-4k miles per year so does not bother me,my old M5 was even worst @11.2 mpg !!!.
but its the last of the big V8 that Bmw will ever built so (even more so with the E60 V10), so if yr a petrol head then it one of them cars that you must own in yr life time .

Having said that my M3 is cheaper to run than my Subaru impreza P1 as the condition base sevice makes it cheaper to run if you do low mileage( if you follow Bmw schedule service),
In three year ownership my M3 has only done 14,400 miles to date..and if you follow bmw schedule service timetable that would be only 2 oil service ( first been the running-in service @1200 mile which is a must, then the 2nd when the car has done 15k miles ), but me been a petrol head my M3 has had 4 oil service already (that 8.8litres of castrol TWS each time @ a cost of £80-90 just for the oil alone...more if its supply by Bmw stealers ).

The M5 and M3 secondhand now is a bargain if you can run one ....£25K will get you a nice example , last of the big bored "M"cars :)...these are everyday cars that can mixed with the best of them and carry 4 people in comfort !

 
hiya,,blimey bighead,,that has opened my eyes somewhat!! although the m3 was never an option as totally unsuitable for my wife and far too much power for a daily driver also out of our budget,
i was just amazed that so much car was available for that sort of money even if you do take the running costs on-board,
it seems theres so much choice out there at the moment and its the 1st time i have considered letting my beloved s2 go
if i do decide to change,,fortunatly i do bugger all miles, so really juice wouldnt be an issue,,, within reason lol,,, 11 mpg from your m5,,i assume thats when giving it beans and not on the way to waitrose lol thats amazing,,bighead,,must have been best mates with your local shell garage,,thanks for the info bighead,,regards jason p
 
11.2mpg for the M5 is actually podding around town!....if you are heavy on the gas pedal the mgp will fall into single digit !!
the best I got out of the M3 on motorway speed is around 17-18 mpg(80-90ish mph).
These cars will fall into your budget very soon, and if you get one with the DCT gearbox your wife will love it believe me, i hate auto box as a rule but even I was impress will the DCT box in my M3, it can be a auto ,semi auto or manual whichever mood that you are in with alot of settings in M mode plus launch control, i have the EDC suspension option as well which is great .

In a way these cars are so capable in what ever they do ..its becomes abit boring , my P1 has much more character and more drivers appeal :)

Compare to the M3 my 944S seems really slow :(

Don't worry Paul, RX8s have their share of issues (engine rebuilds well before 6 figure mileages, failing catalytic converters, a propensity to kill ignition coils...). A friend of mine was moaning about how little he could get for his RX8 in comparison for an Audi TT with double the miles (forgetting that an Audi may have a slightly better chance of doing significantly more miles!).

Saying that, they are a great car when working right. But it would be foolish to assume that buying an RX-8 would give you a trouble free experience.
