thoughts after a year of my 944

So I'm just over one year of ownership of the porker. I thought I should share my experiences so far.

In summary I love it, but wow has it been expensive! Yeah, i know it is a Porsche so what else should i expect?

I've mentioned in other postings about the issues with me having a new UK drivers license and the rather pricy insurance that has resulted. Well after a year of no claims and a clean license the insurance has come down from £1800 to just over £1000. I've been told that with no claims and a clean license I can expect a similar percentage decrease next year. So that's insurance dealt with - what about the other costs of ownership?

Well, all i can suggest to other prospective owners is read the buyers guides and don't ignore them. I bought my car because I'd looked at a number of cars that were falling apart from rust. I bought one that wasn't. it was the first car I checked out that wasn't composed of rust, so I rushed in. So what was the downside? I don't have a place to work on the car and have limited mechanical experience. So I'm in the position of having to take it to an independent to have work done.

In the last year I've fixed or replaced:
new radiator
caster mounts
suspension bushings
arb bushes
wheel bearing
belts
water pump
front engine reseal
front disks and pads
rear wiper motor
new heater control unit
sort out problems with read window defroster
drivers side door window motor and associated bits
thermostat
2 oil changes
clutch master and slave cylinders and all hoses
adjust handbrake
driveshaft seal replaced
steering U-joint
sunroof microswitch
plugs and air filter (which i was able to manage myself)
DME relay

gosh... as you can imagine even at an independent that's come to a fair bit more than i paid for it in the first place. Certainly more than i'd see if i sold it. Probably several thousand more than I'd see:-( I've somehow gone down the cost no object route. I've got to say it's driving beautifully. I liked it when I bought it, but now it's just gorgeous to drive. 7000 miles later it's immensely better than when I bought it. I drove it home today in the pouring rain and it felt taut and responsive and the best car I've ever owned. So i'd say it's worth it.

Had I known it would cost this much when i bought it, would i have gone this route? hmmm... probably not. I'd most likely have bought a Boxster. Certainly my total outlay wouldn't be too much different, but who knows what the bills would be there.

Doing it again, I would read all the buyers guides and avoid any cars without recent history of fixes for the known problem areas. I'd pay to get it inspected - merely acknowledging my lack of mechanical knowledge. For someone with mechanical skills and somewhere to work on it, a 944 is a massive bargain. Even having to pay for all that work I still think it's a better deal than most new cars that will depreciate like mad in the first year. So even though I did it all wrong, the car is now superb. I love it and on balance yeah it's worth it! Best car I've ever owned by miles.

Ouch. You have had an expensive year. It is great that you are still able to enjoy the car, and of course, the car is just getting better in your ownership.

Fingers crossed that Year 2 is a bit lighter on the wallet.

It is an old car and you have probably sorted the bits that needed doing now, if it had parked up in a garage for 20+ years it would still have wanted money spent on it.
Enjoy, hopefully you have weathered the storm [:)]

Hi young man

Sounds a similar story to mine although I have just passed the 2 year ownership in the first year I replaced the following

Front discs
pads all round
Flexi hoses
Battery
Tyres all round
Bonnet struts
Boot catches
Sunroof nylon cogs
Front struts and springs
front lower wishbone/ball joint
All filters and oil

2nd year was the killer
Cylinder Head (cam chain failure at 135,000 miles)
Top end gasket set
both camshafts
dizzy cap + rotor arm + leads
spark plugs
filters and oil X 2
Cam belt + rollers
water pump (well while your there and there is no history of being done before)
Decat pipe
performance airfilter kit
Promax chip (still to fit)
Replaced castor bushes (968 upgrade)
Throttle cable
Both handbrake cables and return springs

Like you I think my car drive really well, pulls cleanly from 1500 rpm in top gives 26 mpg round town and 31 on a run, brakes feel a bit dead but think that is the pads (EBC red stuff) poor choice for a road car IMHO

There are other ways to spend money on cars but the end result is the same and not as enjoyable. My sister is selling her Boxter but wouldn't change if you paid me.

Happy motoring, enjoy and dont worry about the cost just think how much you would loose in depreciation on any number of rep mobiles

Funny you posting this as I bought mine last April, its been back on the road since May last year and I've just been thinking what I've been through with it, on the back on 2 924's (last one a S so knew the 2.5 by the time I bought the '44)

My journey... saved the car from being broken, bought not knowing anything about it really but thatink was that I could break it for what I paid if need be.

Just for the MOT...

rear discs inc. handbrake shoes
pads all round
welding to areas around the jacking points/ lower inner wing/rear sill ends
993 wheels, which were then swapped for a set of D90's
full set of from bushes from OPC
n/s wishbone
partial fuel pipe replacement
belt and tensioner change
full engine filter/fluid service
loads of little bits from OPC, trim parts, heater clips
alternator bushes
All water hoses repalced with new from OPC
drivers door replaced after the strap snapped and wind took it into the wing!

16k later and its only ever let me down three times, once in the dark when the atl. bushes gave up, once in the depths of winter when it blew a water pipe and the other day when the rotor arm bolt disappeared on the A19.
None of which were the cars fault really, 2 age related faults and one that I'm guessing was mine as I really don't remember putting any loctite on it []

And I'm of the same opinion, still love it!! (Ok there have been a few times when I've though about getting something more modern (alfa gtv for e.g.)
But all it takes is a drive in the '44 and all those thoughts go away!

Mine is a daily driver and cost £750 in the first year, £2,200 in the second year and £400 so far this year, I expect to spend another £500 before winter.

On the plus side I have only bought one pair of tyres in 21,000 miles, although I will replace the fronts before winter in spite of them having another 10 yeas left in them (P6000s), and there has been no depreciation.

When I leased a Scooby it cost me around £3,500/year (Mate's rates) and I was left with no asset, I prefer the 944 and at least I have something that is mine

Ian

Well done for maintaining the car properly and taking on the commitment of the general renovation which is needed on all cars of this age if you want them to be as good as possible now, and one of the much smaller number of cars (compared to today's numbers) which will be around in the long term.

Mine has also cost well over the purchase price to get a full mechanical / suspension refurb over the first 18 months, and is currently having about the same again spent on a full body restoration. It looked and drove decently enough by the standards of 20 year olds when I bought it but I am a perfectionist and want it just right. It makes no rational sense as a means of economical transport, but that's not why I want it, and I am taking a long term view rather than attempting to achieve 'bangernomics". Looks like you are taking a long term view too.

So you are not alone, even though it can feel quite lonely sometimes being one of the relatively small number of people in the UK prepared to put really substantial money and/or their own skilled labour into a 944 (which is why this is a good place to hang around as we probably have most of those people on this forum).

Good man for sticking with it, its worth remembering that these cars did 25+ years on their original components so by extrapolating that if you can keep the chassis in one piece you shouldn't have much trouble getting the same out of it again. I hope the value of cars such as yours becomes better appreciated by other potential 944 owners and that the value climbs to where it really should be.

Good man Ian... At least you have done all the hard work... I cant see the car costing you a lot from now on... !

I have mine 11 years and it will cost me at least €1200 this year... I have spent 6-700 so far but it is all looking good ! I done a lot of overtime and told a lot of fibs to cover the work...!

Once it is out on the road and I am behind the wheel all is forgiven - If you want a cheap car to run why not a '97 K11 Nissan Micra ? or a '03 Ford Focus TDDi ? Yes cheap to run and maintain ... but they fall down dismally in the smiles per miles category !

To me a car like a 944 is definately worth it... ! Anyway its a lot cheaper to maintain than a lot of classics - Wifes boss has an old Jag Mk2 which has ate its way through nearly €3000 this year alone.......

At the moment I'm sitting at the foot of blencathra just outside keswick in the lake district. I drove up this afternoon and the car was a delight to drive every one of the 300ish miles. After I climb blencathra I'm looking forward to a couple off days of driving on the kind of roads the car loves.

i've had my 944 for about 2 1/2 years now and heres what i've done

all belts plus bearings and tensioners
couple of services
DME relay
clear indicators
waterpump
bonnet and boot struts
replaced both sills and fitted fibre glass sill covers

and that's about it

total cost......

£1080.00

i think that's pretty good for 2 1/2 years ownership :)

next year is £1000 for a complete suspension overhaul to Koni adjustables, then who knows lol

Good man Ian. The 944 is a real beauty. I bought mine earlier this year and like you, i am spending good morning to get it back on the road in the manner that it deserves ! I've even got hold of an original stereo (brand new) but no manual to fit in to keep the car as original as possible. at present my car needs:-

new front discs, pads, shocks, tyres, replacement bushes ............... and the mot and tax !

But it does not matter as I'm in it for the long term and I enjoy the tinkering when time allows !
