Thinking of buying a 993

My advise would be a Porsche 993 S manual coupe 1998 with full service history and the lowest possible mileage, below 30,000 miles. Manual transmission colour iris blue or silver.

As I'm fed up of seeing my ISA grow and with next to no interest from the bank I've decided to invest in a 993. I have seen that prices are particularly high and rising so I'm basically seeking any advice, ie what model, what to avoid and whether or not the market in 993's is reaching it's peak. The model I really hanker after is a C4S turbo body but I realise that there were only 181 brought into the UK so I might have to lower my expectations. Thanks in advance for any help.
 
. In descending order in terms of value I guess RS and other exotic versions, turbos, S versions (2 or 4) then standard. I tend to agree with you on the desirability of the 4S but I'm biased - had mine for nearly 16 years now and its still a lovely looking and effective bit of kit. Ultra reliable, practical, engaging to drive and not stupidly expensive (but not cheap) to run. non varioram engines and sportmatic versions are arguably less desirable and some dislike the targa, though personally when i had one I loved the mechanism and had no problems. There are no utter turkeys in terms of model variants that should be avoided.Within that general order originality, condition and history and sensible (not necessarily ultra low) mileage probably most important factors for a given car

I am in two minds about all the investment hoo haa. In one sense its nice to have an appreciating asset though on the other hand it does take the cars out of circulation. I still use mine as a regular second car during the spring/summer and autumn but have somewhat sadly stopped doing the odd track day in it as its just too scary in terms of financial risk, especially as I'm semi retired these days. Some of the dealer prices look really high to me but who knows. given the relatively limited numbers of cars i expect you are right that the likely potential is up. But if investment= putting car in storage that misses out on driving a great car.

 
This really is narrowing the field down Tony. unlesss of course you have one for sale.

The only real investment in any car is the enjoyment of ownership and driving.

 
Think it's a bit late to buy a bargain 993 wide body in the last 2 years they have gone up a considerable amount anyone that bought one say 5 years ago to present day must be very happy.

Enjoyment and profit.

When I say 'investment' it is going to be used, just not very much. I've had a number of Porsche before and I've always had a big soft spot for them, they are without doubt the most use able, practical super car ever so that's why I want to buy the right car,spec etc and hang onto it, I mean how much fun do you have looking at a bank statement that says this year you've earned 'sod all'!

 
I think your money is safe in a classic Porsche and in particular a 993 but I think you have missed the boat this time around for the fast returns, the right spec cars come up once in a blue moon and the dealers are cashing in on the current investment potential. I see prices flattening out now for the next 5 years unless you have the cash for the real collectable stuff (RS or Turbo) which you can't really use if you want to attract the financial return.

My advice would be to buy the best spec you can afford with solid history, I favour coupe, manual box, widebody will attract a £20k + premium, and enjoy using it but don't forget your running costs either come off the investment potential or fall into the entertainment category.

For me it's safe money with a huge smile and an extremely cool way to travel.

Cliff at least you get to try most of of the cars in the Porsche range.

You still own a couple.of very desirable cars.

Only my opinion,

Coupe with manual gearbox, either a 2 or 4, and preferably the later varioram engine. Carrera 2 for a smoother overall drive. Carrera 4 for surefooted cornering.

As for an investment, I'm not so sure. Most current owners bought the 993 because they love it, not for financial gain, me included.

I suspect the values may continue to rise as more people have a desire for that 'classic porsche' feel and the pure simple lines that seem to have gone missing in the later watercooled versions, so I suspect demand is likely to continue outstripping supply for the foreseeable.

Well I eventually found one and bought it, a 1998 C4S in Arctic Silver. Completely original, undamaged car in stunning condition, slightly high miles but you can't have everything. Thanks for everyone's input.

I'm a grand lighter in the pocket and still no car.
