That Ferrari 250GTO Replica

I've read all the previous comments on these S2 replica cars. A lot of comments on destroying 944 donor cars and I understand their attitude. Most of us are petrol heads and who has'nt dreamed of driving a Ford GT40, AC Cobra all of which we see at are shows are mostly replica cars. The price of an original one is astronomical. The Ferrari 250 GTO is top of the pile only 36 cars in existance the last one sold for £17.5 million at auction in 2008 and is a Guiness world record for a car sale. So to drive a 250 replica to me is OK, it will never be spot on to the original but those S2 clones are the best I've seen without going to ferrari engined replica cars which cost at least £250k-£500k. I've spoken to the guy who builds the S2 replica, and as well as superb workmanship they are very fast. The engines have been breathed on, air induction, special exhaust and chipped around 225-230bhp also weight is down to 1130kg from1350kgs they retain porsche, brakes, cooling, electrics, future mods include replica seats as all 250 came from the factory with blue coloured bucket seats. So if I had 30k in my pocket I would be tempted as I would have a suberb replica that drives like a porche sports car.

So why not buy a Porsche sports car, rather than ruin a perfectly good 944 and create a poor caricature of a stunning original Ferrari in the process?![8|]

It will never sound like the original, which is the very heart of the car imho, hence putting the aesthetics to one side, you end up with a lighter 944 (not a bad thing) but one that is doing a poor impression of a ferrari icon, along with an 80's interior complete with cod Ferrari detailing...[8|]

Sorry, just don't get it.

Now the Lancia Stratos replica, complete with 24v Alfa V6 power, that's a different matter....[:D]

Just my 2p worth... I am not against replicas as long as they long 99.9% the same visually... This particular 250GTO version looks really comical at the rear end as the overhangs dont sit right ! I am not sure I would want to own it and personally, I rather do without knowing that these are the cars that are out of my financial reach and they can then remain my dream cars... Sorry if I upset anyone but thats my personal opinion...

I'm sceptical about that output power from an S2 engine, it's not impossible but takes some doing and I'd say very difficult without a custom map done on a rolling road. I got 222bhp with an admittedly worn bottom end but a fresh cylinder head and a few other tweaks (MAF etc). I'd like to see some build pics to see exactly how much metal work is cut away to acheive that weight too and what stiffening is added to make up for it. I assume the weight quoted is for the version with the bucket seats as the cars I saw had 944 seats in and they're really heavy.

I'm always sceptical about figures (especially price) having followed a lot of build threads on other kit cars (mainly Ultimas), but if the idea appeals then go for it, I couldn't and wouldn't do it, but then I have evil plans to build a 924GTP replica so who am I to talk about what's right.

Yes the Stratos replica at least looks exactly the same as the original and with the right engine sounds just as good if not better than the real thing. The GTO "replica" (maybe "pastiche" would be a better description) fails on all those counts so honestly whats the point ?

From what I've read most Ultima builds end up at around the £50k mark [] I'd love one but the chance to own one is a few years away! Its been said before but if I had £30k and wanted a Ferrari I'd buy a real Ferrari that would have the benefits of good resale value and being able to park with the Ferrari's at an owners meet rather than hiding it in the car park [:D].

Yup, true.

You can buy a 355 for 30K

Agreed.

The best Ferrari replica I have seen was based on a Jag - awesome attention to detail...........
