I noticed a article on a Porsche site sorry cannot get the link to show on here, that was a bit unclear it relates to type of oil used in Porsches I being a novice when it comes to these things though it did not matter to much which brand one uses ,but according to this it does and only Mobil oil is suitable in our cars ,it goes on to say this is very important in earlier car the likes of 944. 968. 993 .and advises that owners that have used anything different are advised to contact there service centre,and get the oil removed .I for one only use Mobil 1 as advised in the hand book .I meant to post this yesterday when I read it .
 
It is the spec of the oil that is important not the make. Marketing man's dream some people!

Brian, you are absolutely right. After this being discussed over lunch at Bruar yesterday, I too looked up this report. Apparently using the wrong oil, especially in 993's, can cause the pistons to melt. I'd hate to be a 993 owner using the wrong oil, especially at this time of year!

Sorry folks ..I am inclined to be with on JH on this issue esp all 993 owners ,I like to point out the date off this directive I read 1st April 2007
 
I know of one oil that is known to ruin 993 engines after a few hundred miles. Think it may have been Esso branded stuff(?)

If you have it in your car get under it quick and drain off the oil immediately. Small cup is fine to catch the old stuff.

Buy the most expensive Mobil 1 you can find and put one full fill through the engine to flush it(12 litres). Replace the drain plug and refill with clean Mobil 1.

Job Done.
 
... and if your brake pads squeak, soak them overnight in the Mobil 1 you used to flush the engine, and they will be silent.
