The budget this year Road tax up again....Dirty barstewards[][]

For the Lux & Turbo €899 + 4% = €935 per year
For the S2 even worse €1231 + 5% = €1283 per year

This is an absolute disgrace... This country is a mess.....

I just feel that the people in the middle are getting raped every time - time to emigrate I say.... Fen any room for me and the missus in NZ....?

I had a buyer lined up for my Lux, until he realised that the import duty was going to cost him nearly as much as the car. Bit heavy, I'd say!

Dont get me started on the import duty also known as VRT []

The 944 is not listed so you have to take the car up to be "Valued" by one of the Revenue officers. He can charge you anything he sees fit. I was told in the past that for the roughest dog of an S2 they will charge €1600 for one that is pure mint they will charge up to €3600.... And for what....?[] Thomas was charged €1956 VRT and €899 Tax for his '87 944 Turbo which he got cat D salvage for £1800. What a rip-off []

You have to pay then because you are showing the car to them with GB plates. There is no escape. It dosent matter what you paid for the car originally in the UK. If you got it for free you still have to pay the VRT.

That is basically why 944's are a rarity around these parts unfortunately []

That would be true as the new system is based around emissions and the old system is on cc's. Cars up to 2008 are classed on the old system

All these rates are up by 4-5% dependant on cc's with the latest budget

I recently paid less than $100 for my S2's annual tax here in California.

Hmm, we pay just under $1,000 Kiwi property tax - call it £350/yr. To offset that we're not on mains water, gas or rubbish collection.

Fen if you had that 4.0ltr jeep in Ireland the tax would be €1565 per year... Thats about GBP £1200.... My missus spent a year in NZ and says that she regretted leaving....

I think its a swings and roundabouts thing.

I'd take issue with the "Motoring in UK - fairly reasonable". In fact, I'd disagree with property tax being "Fairly reasonable" as well ...

Petrol is just coming back down to £1/litre. About 78p of which is tax. We also pay stupid amounts of tax to even permit our cars to be on the road (New Porsche? Pants-down to the tune of over £400 from next year), and then we have the (mandatory) insurance taxed as well. I wouldn't mind this if a reasonable amount of effort was put into policing our roads (and no, I'm not talking about speed cameras) and maintaining their surfaces. Oh, and doing something about the ridiculous amounts of traffic in the South East.

Housing Tax - we pay around £1400 a year in London to have our bins emptied every two weeks. They do pay for the electricity to run our streetlights as well (although I'd have thought that should come out of road tax - see grumble above.) But if I want to leave my car outside my house, on our road (yes, that'll be the road that I have already paid Road Tax to allow me to drive on) then our local council will charge me another £140. Because it's a "Big Engine", therefore releases lots of nasty, evil carbon dioxide which kills small children. (The fact that while my car is parked it is producing no carbon at all seems to have escaped them.)

Don't get me started on income tax. Or stamp duty. Or corporation tax. Or inheritance duty. Or airport taxes. Or tax on beer, or tax on decent whisky. Or tax on importing things from parts of the world where the tax regiemes are lower.

I seriously reckon that well over 75% of my annual income is paid directly to the government in a tax of one form or another.

Jaysus Oli I didnt realise it had got so bad in the cities in fairness. I used to pay about £350 for council tax when I lived in Eglinton.. £1400 is a total rip off as for £400 tax thats a disgrace. I never checked up - I was just going by what I had paid in the past....!

We are all getting ripped off in some format or other. Now that I think of it Id say at least 65% of my income is going in some government coffer somewhere as well....! And still the greedy barstewards are looking for more... []

Because taxation methods vary so significantly by country, its hard to get an overall sense of how much taxes you get stiffed with.

But one way to look at it is to compare total taxation (combined federal, state and local) to the GDP. When you do that, you see some interesting results.

I wonder why I work sometimes, when those who choose not to seem to live at least as good a life as me, if not better. I guess it's because, as a friend of mine once very succinctly put it, "We will work, and they won't."

Oh... another 'cost' that you need to pay for in the US is health insurance (its not covered by taxes).

For my family (2 parents, 2 young kids), its about $1,300/month. Typically, employers pay the bulk of that (e.g. 80% or more) and the remaining is out of pocket. But if you're self employed (or you work for a company that doesn't provide health insurance, a not uncommon situation), you have to pony up the full amount yourself.

Now at $1,300/month, you do get very good insurance. We could probably get the price down to as low as $900/month, but we'd have huge deductables (like in the $5K range). A recent anedote... a friends 3-yr old recently cut himself when he fell on a toy at our house. Nothing major, but it required a few stitches at a local A&E. Coincidently they were switching insurance providers and there was a few days gap when they had no coverage. And naturally the boy had the accident in the gap. They were billed (and had to pay) a smidge over $1K for the stitches.
