Tap tap tapping.. tap tap tap oh it's not going away!

Got my project 2.7 back last night

started to look into it this morning.. broke the sun roof already well it was partly glued in with sikoflex [&:] quality repair [:D] anyway one extra on the to do list.


But the alarming issue is I don't want to do any damage to the car but on start up it's tapperty

It's hyraulic tappets. So as I have had the car running for 15mins to warm it right up the tapping it not going away.

Chris mentioned long term stored cars this can happen and it is a case of taking it for a drive. I am happy to do that but it just goes against the grain when you hear a tapping sound.

So has any one else had this before? how long before it cleared.

it's been sat for over a year. But all the tapping is even eg, it's clearly happening on ALL the tappets it's not just down to ONE tappet.. so air is in there some where..

 
I dont want to teach you to suck eggs, but are you certain that it is the tappets and not the noisy and sound like tappets injectors?
 
If its the tappets its quite loud and obvious. Mine had this after sat being painted for 8 weeks. CT is right it just needs a drive to sort out, surprising how long the noise lasts tbo, its fine now but bit disconcerting at the time.

I've had this too after a long lay-up. One or more hydraulic tappets get gummed up & stuck in their compressed state; this means the cam lobe whacks a solid object rather than a fluid damped one & that's the noise you hear. I wouldn't rev it much but use a heavy right foot in a high gear to get some heat into the oil & it should unstick itself.
 
Have heard good things about the Wynns stuff. Mine was doing this alarmingly loudly after being laid up for a couple of months doing belts/water pump. An oil change and leaving it running and it suddenly went quiet (without any additive) after about 20 mins (was waiting for the thermostat/fans to kick in after fully draining the system). I poured in the Wynns anyway just after it quieted down for good measure. No tappet noise since.
 
It's nothing to worry about - but you may need to drive it & to get the revs up a bit rather than leave it idling. The first time it happened to me I was convinced the engine was suffering something terminal. Should go within 10 mins or so of starting driving. Have had this on my turbo and my S2 when they have been sat.
 
Its just been serviced, so it is sound very much as mentioned its just going to away once the air has escaped.
Just as a mec fitter you never like the sound of metal on metal.

The sound is even across the board, all the tappets so I am sure it will go.

I only asked if others had the same and how long before it went.
 
Top end engine valve train flush is what you need, runs out at about £8 a bottle,add it into the oil and let it run for 10 mins...............sorted !
 
I have to say that it seems unusual to a non 944 expert like me, for all the tappets to rattle across the board. Surely, when the engine is stationary it is the constant pressure of the valve spring against the tappet holding it open that gradually squeezes the oil out of the chamber. Usually the engine will stop with one cylinder coming up to compression which means that another one will be going down on its power stroke so there will be no pressure on 4 or 8 of the tappets dependiing on whether the head is 8 or 16 valve. These tappets may well pump back up after a good run but if they are in good condition they should not collapse during the cranking phase of the engine before the oil pressure builds up. I had this on mine, on a single tappet, when it was laid up for a week for a bonnet respray after 3rd party responsibilty was assumed for a series of mysterious scratches when it was on display. When I picked it up it took from the other side of Binfield to Maidenhead Thicket for the noise to go away. Strangely after an oil change it now spends weeks on end in the garage and providing I don't leave it for more than five weeks it starts on the button and there is never any tappet noise.

Last night after leaving it from that 15 min tick over the other day. I started it to take it out the garage to show my mate and I warned him of the metal tapping sound and it started fine the noise was there but not as bad and then it slowly started to go. Till in the end 2 or 3 mins later it was ticking over as quite as a mouse.

So its all ok this end. It was a worry, more based on the sound. To a mechanical fitter like my self this was alarm bells screeming in my head.

So I can now say yes long term storage will make your tappets rattle.
