System too Rich?

Hi Guys,

I purchased my first 911 last week, and in the first few hours of owning it I got a "Drive to Garage, check engine" light come up on the dash, at this point the fuel was pretty low, so I wondered if this had anything to do with it? The next day was a Sunday and I took it to the only Garage open, they put it on the diagnostics and it came up with the message "System too rich, banks 1 & 2". They turned the light off, but tonight it has appeared for the first time since.

I can't get to the dealer until Saturday, so I was wondering if anyone has any idea what this warning meant and if the car will be OK to drive for the rest of the week?

It would have been nice to have the error code number, but it sounds to me like it might be the MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor reading inaccurately, causing the engine control unit to think that the mixture is running rich. It is a fairly common issue, unfortunately. Another thing you could check is that the fuel filler cap is seated properly and tight. Check the 'O' ring inside the cap hasn't broken.

You should be OK driving it, as long as the 'check engine' doesn't start flashing, in which case it could be damaging the catalytic converters.

It's a shame ownership had to start like this - I'm sure it's nothing major, and once sorted you can get used to some reliable fun!

I took the car into the independant that I purchased it from and they said it was a fault with the trottle. It's fine to drive and I'm having it fixed under warrently next week. [:D]
