OK, time for a suitably mundane question to get you all out looking at your cars (sorry, it's the best question I can come up with for today [:(] )

Just in front of the ashtray I've got 4 holes for rocker switches, and only 3 switches plus a horrible bit of black sticky tape covering the fourth hole.

Here's where you all go and have alook at your cars because I've got switches for rear wiper, left/right mirror selector and I can't remember what the third one is !

Anyway, here's your chance to contribute... who's got 4 switches in their car, and if so what do they do. And who's got a spare switch (or blanking plate if one's available) that I could have to tidy up this annoying little bit of tape that's over the hole. I'm sure if someones got a box of old bits they'd let me have a switch if I send them an SAE, just to tidy it up really.

Any offers?

Phil

Yep! [:)]

Here is a piccy of the switches and wiring (ashtray removed) in my 1983 2.0

From left to right - Door mirror adjustment rocker - headlight washers - driving lights - rear wiper

PPS although my driving lights switch appears to be wired up nothing appears to happen when I flick the switch - I suppose the 'bumper' lights are supposed to switch on? Will have to check this out if I can.

Thanks chaps (Paul, what a star you are, how come you happen to have a picture of this obscure bit just when I need it? - no wonder you're reg. sec)

I'll have a look at mine as I don't recall it being driving lights or headlamp washer. All will be revealed tomorrow.......

Phil

The lights to which you refer are normally wired as driving lights, selected by the switch and should come on with main beam Paul. If they dont, check the fuses and the relay.

hi phil

this three switch thingy might be common only to the S as mine also only had three switches and a blank, however i soon replaced my missing switch but not for the lights as they are mounted on the right side of the dash. But the cunning little new switch ( which i got from halfords and matchs) now turns on the fan manually so no over heating in traffic for me, and pearl is a happy bunny.

Marc

Ps its opperation is extreamly simple and i would recommend everyone do it as are engines are getting old and need all the help they can get.

Drive it like you love it

Nice one Marc.

For those that couldn't sleep in anticipation, I can announce that I have the headlamp washers (hadn't even noticed) and they work. Bingo !

So that makes sense of what Marc says as it's the driving lights that don't have a switch - although I haven't noticed one on the dash either - not very observant about these things, you know. I'll have a look for that. I guess we are talking about the lights in the bumper, the ones that come on when you pull the flasher (excuse me ? [;)] )

cheers ....... Phil

Marc

Thanks Marc, top man! an e-mail is on its way.

Don't you just love this forum [:)][:)][:)]

Phil

Marc, I'm intrigued by your dashboard switch for the driving lights. I don't seem to have one. If we're talking about the same lights (the ones in the bumper) mine are on all the time with the headlights.

Anyway, to the left of the steering wheel I have hazard lights and heated rear screen, and to the right is the headlight switch with instrument panel dimmer control (which is like quite-dim or off [:-] )

In the centre I have a fog light switch, but to be honest that didn't look like it did a lot - must have a look at that.

So, any ideas. It's a '88 model so maybe the dimmer control replaced a seperate driving light switch by then. Are you there John Stratford, as yours is a late model too.

cheers ....... Phil

So does the left hand switch in this picture operate the lights in the bumper on the first position?

And what the hell is that blinking great thing to the right of it???? That's where I've got a knurled wheel to dim the instrument panel lights.

BTW - my rear wiper works, so I don't feel so bad [:D] - be a bit more useful if it wiped the bit of the screen that you can see out of though [:-]

cheers ........ Phil (SAE is on it's way)

yep the switch operates the lights in the bumper in the first postion and then in the second the lights pop up, there is a diimer wheel just the the right of it, and if you look carfully you can see it. The big piece of plastic is my imobiliser.
and with regards to the rear wiper Doh... im thinking of removing it altogether and freeing up the switch on my centre consol for a new one to operate my sub (oh you boy racer you )[:D]

This gets more peculiar. My lights pop up on the first click (as well as the bumper lights switching on. Oh, well, not really a big problem is it. Let's leave it there before everyone thinks we're really sad old geezers [:(]

Mind you, when I switch the lights off (from the second position) the instrument lights go off and then flash on/off quickly. Probably symptomatic of a wiring 'issue', but i really don't want to get involved as I just know I'll end up with no lights at all (cue Sunroof tales......[])

cheers .......... Phil

Hmmm...

On mine the (bumper) sidelights come on with the first click of the switch, then the headlights pop up lit with the second click.

But then if you go back a click the headlights go out but stay popped ([:)]) and the sidelights stay on

I've often wondered if the pop ups are supposed to have sidelights in them as well?

On the subject of rear wipers -

Does everyone else's make a comedy noise every time the rear wiper is operated?
Mine makes a really loud kind of mechanical noise with every sweep.

I don't have the four switches on my S. Just the three. My bumper lights come on with the flasher on the steering column. First switch position prings the headlights up with the side lights on and then main beam on the second position. What I'd like is to be able to switch on the driving lights without having to pop the headlights up. They offend my ideas of streamlining and spoil the lines of the car. (I don't mind when its dark though!)
