Sunroof seals

Having sorted the radiator, I now need to sort the sunroof seals, I'm sure I saw a post on here where someone had found seals from manufacturer which aren't OEM but are the same but a lot cheaper. I did a search but can't find anything.

If I imagined this, does anyone know the cheapest place to get these from?, a net search suggests the body seal seems to be around £18 and the panel seal about £60 -70 is this about right??

Cheers

Norm

I'm in a similar situation (the sunroof seals OK - despite it having an obvious small tear in it - but creaks something rotten.) Watching this thread with interest ... Oli.

OK, so I'm still watching this thread with interest, but it's gone very quiet. Did you get anywhere in your hunt, Norm? Oli.

Sorry I went quiet Oli [:)] I haven't got round to sourcing one yet as she needed new boots on the front and £180 has left me a bit skint as far as the `44 fund is concerned[8|] I've also got to sort out some paint chipping / cracking on one edge of the sunroof panel as well + repaint the stone chipped door mirrors ! I know people will think I'm mad but my local halfords store can supply paint matching in a 1/4 litre for me to spray with my airbrush or panel gun for £19 - might be worth go, the guy I spoke to said as long as he's got the code and I bring in a `piece' of the car ( sunroof ) he can scan it to get a good match. I used them when I needed a small amount of paint for my 19 year old shogun and the match was perfect. Norm

Right, I've now got a new sunroof seal from Frazerpart - £72 inc p&p ( listed as genuine porsche part ), only thing is the new one is all rubber ( if that makes sense ) but the old one has a `felt' type bit that seals between the roof and the panel, which admittedly is a bit green with moss on mine. Question is, is the new seal the right one? , my cars an `88 and I ordered a post 86 one. A bit puzzled now Norm

Norm, Did you get a price from OPC? It's always worthwhile nearly everything I've replaced has come from OPC I work on the basis that the original has lasted this long so the renewed parts should see me not replacing them again.

Plus one from me on OPC.Ialways phone them first after having a bit of a scan on the web and with club discount and a bit of friendly banter they are nearly always cheaper.

The furry one is the updated seal but i find it a bit too tight and the sunroof doesnt seat perfectly. The all rubber one is the old design but seems to be a bit better.

Hmmmm the one I got from Frazerparts is supposed to be a genuine one, my cars an 1988 and the one in at the moment is a `flock' coated one which given the condition (poor) and the mossy green coat , looks original. I'm just waiting to get a spare sunroof from a member on hear so that I can take mine out, refurb it and put the new seal on. I'll update when this is done to let you know how I get on. Norm ps has anyone else had the sunroof suffer with cracking/chipped paint round the edges ?? pps I'd try an OPC but nearest is in colchester I believe - bit of a trek from here :(

Probably a sign that it's been painted at some point in it's past. Hardly surprising with cars of our age

Yes I did know it has been sprayed in the past, I checked through the paperwork I got with it and the previous owner had `chips away' repair it , they did state it might return in the future though. Just wondered why when the roof is plastic should the paint crack like that? Norm

For full and proper adhesion to take place the surface needs to be fully keyed (rubbed down). When you get chipping or cracking at the edge of a panel it's a sign that the preparation has been done with the rubber seals in place so it can't be fully keyed right to the edge. It's common to find it around window seals, edges of doors on cars that have been repainted without the 'glass out'. The sunroof moves around within it's aperture quite a bit as you are driving along (put your fingers in the gap as you drive along). Many years of this flexing will cause the paint to lose adhesion if it wasn't keyed properly so make sure you strip it right down and fully prep it before re painting

I bought a new seal just before the Rutland meet,it was the Furry one.I don't remember them ever not being that way either.Porsche Centre Leicester will Post and Glenn (Parts Chap) knows his front engined cars(just another option).

I've read its a common problem to get chipping on back edge due to water being trapped in the seal, its happened to mine which is on its original paint. I need a new seal too but don't expect it to be fully watertight, pretty sure it isn't designed to be; as long as the drains work you shouldn't get water coming into the cabin. I recently checked my drains by using a drinking straw plus some blu-tack and blowing down them. the front drains go to the scuttle under the bonnet, just under the windscreen, the rears feed into the boot. the drivers side rear also feeds from the filler cap drain via a t-junction which is accessable if you remove the boot trim on that side. for that drain i blocked one entry at a time with my finger and used the same process. ive a feeling the drain tubes may be brittle/leaking where they attach to the drains but need to peel back the headliner from the sunroof to properly investigate this.
