Sunroof failure

The plastic cogs that move the guides up and down on the sunroof have both shredded their teeth, does anyone know where I can get spares or do I have to buy the complete units.?
Also can these be bought new or is it a breakers job?

Cheers

Parts are still available, call your local OPC or Porsche Exeter (best service for 944 owners) they will be able to answer all your questions...

+1 for OPC Exeter.
Nice and easy fix, the instructions on Clark's garage are very comprehensive and accurate. Much, much cheaper from an OPC than certain online vendors.

There about £ 8/12 each, but I would buy extra, can quite easily strip again. Don't won't 2 be caught out with the roof out. Need the roof out 2 be able 2 take the trim off that hides the lifting arms

They were £3 each about 4 years ago. And then £6 each about 2 years ago. Could have bought a stockpile if they are now £12 each and called it an investment ...

Adjust the clutch in the rear so it slips before fitting the new gears. Then tighten it up so it only just grips enough to move the sunroof; that should prevent you from stripping a new set of gears immediately. Checking that the clutch is just on the point of slipping is a good thing to do every year or so IMHO, as a preventative measure.

Oli.

Sounds like you have the later type mechanism same as a 968 - if so, there is one part of the Clarke's instructions that is un-necessary. They tell you to remove the headlining from the sunroof seal at the back of the sunroof aperture to get at the mechanism boxes and access the gears. This is a PITA to replace and is un-necessary - just use a sharp craft knife to cut the headlining round the gearboxes so you can access the securing screws - when you put the plastic centre strip back in place in the roof, it's hidden!

Thanks a lot chaps, I got them from Porsche Sheffield for £5 each in the end. Not looking forward to putting it all back together though, even with the clarkes guide it looks like a right royal pain in the arse!!

Cheaper then last year I'm sure. It's really not that hard. Just check the small washer is put back in with the gear otherwise it can be really hard 2 get the gear out again.
