Starter Motor

Hi gang. Anybody know roughly the price a garage should be charging me for a new starter motor? Fitted as well obviously - they've quoted £250....seems a tad much to me...

Thanks.

New or exchange? I had one for my S2 about a year ago (slightly more maybe) and I think it was £130 exchange. Fitting was free on the basis it's 3 bolts and it has to come off to change belts (for the flywheel locking tool) so shouldn't be a nightmare. Even allowing for putting the car on the ramp and changing it an hour should cover labour.

Had mine totally rebuilt by my local auto factors (across the road) for £20 plus vat. So far it's lasted 3 years. [:)]

Thanks guys....I'll let you know how much the b****r charges me...[] As an aside, this 'mechanic' has mentioned I may need my Cam chain replacing (He's seen my car, realised it's coming up to 100k, and thought "I know, I'll mention the Cam chain, he won't know!") My point is, looking back at my service bumpf, I saw that the chain was re-tensioned a year ago. I've done roughly 6000 miles since I bought the car a year ago, should I take it to a proper Porsche garage and get the truth? Or will having it tightened a while ago be enough?
Thanks.

I think i paid about £240 for a bosch recon. Perhaps a bit over the odds but it was at my favoured Porsche specilaist, RGA

Hipster
You dont tell us what model youve got.????
Regarding the chain...
If its a S2 then YES ita a good idea to renew th chain...
Something else,, The chain CANT be tightened up...its on an auto tensioner....I think your mistaking it for the belts...Which do need retensioning after a replacement....
If i was you ide take it a to a GOOD indie + get some GOOD advice....

Dave - thanks for the reply. Yes, it is an S2 - does £700 incl VAT sound a decent price for changing them? (Camtune in Godalming)

£700 sounds a bit much for changing both belts (cam and balance shaft), as well as the cam chain and tensioner pad.

Most independants charge around £300 to change both belts and another £300 to change the cam CHAIN and tensioner pad.

If the tensioner itself needs changing that will be an extra £250ish and if any of the rollers used by the belts are getting old they are around £40-£50 each

Cost to rebuild engine if any of these components fails 'could' be well over £3000

[end of scare story] []

As I said on another post last week I wouldn't give a scabby Fiesta I was about to scrap to Camtune. Average at best and expensive is my impression of them.

I piad £78 for an exchange starter from ASK in Kippax, nr Leeds. Fitting should be no more then £20

Oh my god - now I'm scared witless! I'm being overquoted for the starter motor, Camtune (my nearest Porsche garage from Mottingham) are going to make me remortage my house, and my car will probably blow up when I drive back to Birmingham for Christmas! Are RGA any good? I think they are the nearest to me....

(And thanks for the replies folks - except your horror story Paul! [;)])

I'm a big fan of RGA - an old school Porsche specialists, there isn't much that boss Bob doesn't now about the marque. They're in an unassuming (even off-putting) site, under the arches at Vauxhall, but there's always several hundred thousand pounds worth of Porsche under their roof. Not overly cheap but good value, I think they charge £50ph.

I have used RGA since buying my car just over a year ago. I've had a top end re-build done by Bob along with other minor jobs. I agree that he isn't cheap but is very thorough and knowledgeable. Also very helpful when I've nipped in for the odd part here and there.

Thanks Sian - I've located a nearer one, Weston Porsche in Beckenham. I'm dropping her off tomorrow, so I'll let you all know what they're like.

Yes - I trust him in this case for several reasons
1. I don't think there was any other reason, the DME checked out alright
2. he used to own one...
3. The car could be bump started. [&:]

The symptom was the engine just clicked everytime the ignition was turned, the starter was getting enough charge.

This particular car has has always been a quick starter, by this I mean it has never been lazy and seemes to almost always start on the second turn. I understand 944's usually take a few more turns before they start.

When mine recently failed I had similar symptoms - just a click. On further investigation it was the big earth lead between the 2 main starter components which had corroded and snapped in half.
Sourced a second hand OE replacement from PH Sportscars - even got them to provide one from the same year of manufacture so it is a identical swap-out. Only charged £40 and they had at least 8 more on the shelf! (not sure if Turbo has same starter as S2 though....?)
Referred to clarke's garage for destructions and did it myself - it was really straight forward.
