Starter Motor replacement

I need to replace the starter motor on my 1998 tiptronic 996 C2. YouTube videos show it is possible as a DIY job but might be a bit tricky getting access to the lower holding bolt.
Has anyone any experience doing this job? In particular can anyone say exactly what length socket extension I'll need for access as I want to get it before commencing the job. Also any tips or particular things to watch out for?
On the other hand, from your experience is this a job I might wish I never started and really should leave it to a garage !!
Any advice gratefully received.

Hi Steve,

Hope you are well. When RPM Technic had mine back (it was making funny noises when under warranty) they advised me that they feel new ones, are not as well made nowadays, as they were back then. and recommended I had it rebuilt, which is something they sent away to be done. Up to you, but thought id mention it

Thanks Andy. I hadn't seen that Pelican article before. I'll have to get some more extensions (I only have a 5" and 10") and wondered if anyone who had done the job could tell me what they used. Anyone?

Hi Mark
Rebuilding is a possibility. I actually saw a video where one was taken apart and it just needed a clean and re-grease as the cog was not sliding back into the starter easily, which is probably the problem with mine. However he had difficulty getting some of the screws undone and had to drill them so I don't think I'll do it myself but I will look into having it reconditioned rather than replace. So thanks.
