Standard Sound System

Following from a recent thread regarding the standard sound system in Porsches, I thought the following may be useful to someone.

Having decided that the sound from the standard fitment was a little thin and reedy, I decided to investigate some reasonable cost options to improve the quality a little. I had already changed the Porsche CD/Radio for a Becker Traffic-Pro, which some of you will be aware is the same unit, but with Sat-Nav built-in, an excellent unit by-the-way.

After contacting several in-car specialists I opted to change the standard speakers, and install a 2-channed amplifier. The standard speakers turned out to be single cone paper type, no tweeters, despite the grills implying that there were. These were replaced with new 4" low profile speakers plus tweeters in the front, with cross-over networks, and upgraded speakers in the rear (my car only had the 4 speaker option). The difference is quite dramatic, the sound now has depth, and volume without distortion, and the total cost for the speaker/amp configuration £500.00

The amp is on the front firewall inside the boot.

I cant remember the make of speakers, except that they were a new design, using glass fibre I think(?) They were very low profile anyway to fit in the front dash

Who fitted the Becker Traffic Pro and I assume you are still happy with it? Also, I presume you now have a CD changer in the boot as well as the amp?

Actually, I haven' t got the CD changer, I keep thinking about it, but never got around to it. The Becker Trafic-Pro is a direct replacement for the CDR-22, and requires no expert knowledge, except the GPS aerial, which runs behind the dash, and sits ontop in the corner of the dash by the A pillar. The instructions do include connecting the Trafic-Pro to the reversing lights, to indicate if you are going backwards (honestly), but Becker did confirm that the GPS will detect reversing within a few seconds anyway, and the additional wiring is not necessary.

Hi Gaxor
I have now changed my company name from 001 Mobile Sounds, (bought my partner out) plus the name didn't represent my goals as specialists.
We are now called Torque Systems at the same address, I've now got my 996 I've always wanted and just found your post here thanks.
The speakers where from Focal.

Any advise I can give please e-mail Paul@torquesystems.co.uk

I have the CDR-22 in my 996. It is attached to a 6 disc changer in the boot. If I upgraded to the Becker Traffic-Pro would that compliment the CD changer - would they work together?

I have a 1998 car (don't know if that affects anything?)

I'm very interested in the sound solution mentioned in this thread. How much would the whole thing cost - soup to nuts?

Cheers [:)]

Hi

Yes the Becker Silverstone 6-CD changer fits all Becker systems, so if you have the standard Porschw autochanger it should be the same.

Hi Paul

I was down there couple of weeks ago - I now have a 996 Turbo. The autochanger failed due to rain water getting in whilst changing the magazine !!

Unfortunately your guys couldn't fix it, so I bought a new autochanger from Becker.

Saw your car there - looks good
