Stainless Steel Exhausts

Anyone care to comment on their experiences in fitting aftermarket SS exhausts - I am seriously considering a Maxflow with 84mm tail pipe to replace what looks like, and it just may be, the original on my 3.2 Carrera Coupe.

Tips, snags, NOISE? I am not a boy racer but I enjoy the sound of a crisp, powerful exhaust.

You could do much worse than talking to Essential Simon - he sells them and modifies them and has experience with them on his 3.2.

It seems that without a complimentary chip, the really low back pressure boxes will have a negative effect on midrange torque and power. They are also quite a lot louder.

If you are prepared to wait just a little while you may be interested in the modification that I plan to do to my std backbox. I hope to have it completed within the next month or so and will be working with Simon on it.

The pipe was 3" Diameter which really looked good and the sound was amazing, no boom problems and not too loud. They made 2 types of spec and mine was the louder of the two but I must stress nothing outragious what so ever...Good luck ..Robert

I have heard one of the full H&S systems. It was more like an SSI or pre 1974 system and had a crossover pipe arrangement between the two heat exchangers then twin mufflers and dual exits. It sounded like a Spitfire at full noise. Awesome! However, I hate to think of the cost - probably £1600 (plus) plus vat plus fitting, but this is a full system not just a backbox as we were discussing above.

Just got off the phone to essential Simon. I think I will buy one of his. He seems knowledgeable. Tells me vertually NO reduction in mid-range performance or torque but great sound. That will do me..

Yes, I think Simon has had less than positive results from the dual outlet but not the single outlet.

Well, I've gone and done it! Ordered a single outlet DNASK system from Simon. As soon as I've got it fitted (hopefully next Sat') I will do a few miles and report back to the forum.

, Took your advice Richard and went to Essential Simon. The massive box arrived containing my polished exhaust with 84mm outlet. Well today was the big day. Fitted new rear pads this morning and generally tidying up the inside of the car. This afternoon it went on the lift and off came the old back box and on went the DANSK unit. Very early I know but I have to say it is quiet at idle, and driving back through town it was no different to the one we had taken off an hour before. Out in the country and the sparkle is back in my baby! Not only does it "appear" to pull well, if not slightly better, it revs easily. I was reminded of changing a back box on an old MkII Jag years ago. The Jag' dealer said we should weigh the new box against the old one. The old one was far heavier being coaked over time. I didn't do that with the new one - stainless against mild steel is not a good comparison. That said, I bet the old box will have a good deal of carbon in it after all these years..

More in a week when it has settled in. Meanwhile, the weather is on the up - Happy motoring!

I would be interested to know if anyone has managed to get one of these exhausts through the Db test at Castle Coombe.
