Speedo Inner Cable - How Long Should It Be ?

I recently tried to fit a speedo inner cable I bought from Pelican Parts in the States but it was way too long. It was marked for 911 (65-75) and 912 and was 275cm long. We managed to shorten it at the gearbox end and had to take off about 28cm to get it to fit - so far it seems OK.

Anybody know how long it should be ?. Somebody once told me there were 2 different lengths - maybe I got the wrong one ?
