SORTED: Going back to standard airfilter on '87 turbo

Hi all,

My turbo has a nasty cone filter installed. I know these provide less restriction than the standard arrangement but i am sure sucking in hot air is not doing any good. What are your thoughts about going back to a standard setup. Will performance be better or worse or similar? Fairly standard besides bailey dump valve and boost enhancer.

Airfilter housing seems like hens teeth to find 2nd hand so am considering buying new from opc unless anyone can suggest a better source.

This has been raised before by mechanic during dyno run, difficult getting enough cool air to the cone, an altnernative might be using a K&N panel filter in the standard air box, less resistance than stock but well fed with cool air. Edd

I dont think they are as rare as you think. Too many people seem to take them off and put somethjng over priced and crappy in their place. I have a complete turbo airbox and its bits in one of my wardrobes for starters :) Totally agree change the insert leave the original box for me. Mas

On my ex turbo race car we kept the original airbox used a KN filter and had an air feed from the front of the car, worked a treat!

Stick to standard air box with good paper filter as a clean paper filter will outperform k & n short term and they cost pence, no performance benefits from k&n and just throw away and replace paper filter, rather than spend a fortune on cleaning products

Original airfilter housing and all bits ordered from my OPC. £180 ish all in after 10% discount. Not too bad a price for brand new I guess. Will be nice to get things looking more original under there! Thanks for the replies. Confirmed my gut feeling. "induction kit" soon to be listed on the bay :)

Thats cheap ? struth you could have had the one i've got for a fraction of that. Austerity is obviously not hitting you then :) Sorry 944 man I was surfing on my mobile missed your post. I had no idea they were that flaming dear or Id have sold it ages ago TBH. It came with my car, all bagged up in a carrier bag as I never took it off the car. Let me check tonight that everything is still in there screws and all etc and you can have 1st dibs. Now I'm thinking don't give it away and don't take the *** obviously :) I don't sell parts as you'll know but I have a starter motor which turned out not to be defective and this airbox basically. Regards Mas

Not sure how you came to this conclusion but the k&n showed slight gains when dyno'd a couple of years ago, the k&n is clean, oil and use again, seems very unlikely cleaning a k&n filter is going to cost a fortune, probably less than your paper filter in fact.... Edd

Sorry Mas - misunderstood your post. I thought you were keeping it. Just realised it is actually the one from my car :) as I have your old black turbo.. Oh well - such is life. Still don't think it was too bad considering it's brand new without broken lugs etc. Haven't seen a decent used one on ebay in the year I've had the car and had no reply to wante ad on here.

You could always sell her back to me and I'll have a use for the airbox and pipe etc ! She'd be a far safer bet to own than my first one, you have a gooden there in my opinion. I still miss her quite badly. [:(]

I'll let you know if ever I sell [:D] To think I thought it would cost me £1000 a year to run! Just blew a 5th of my yearly budget on an airfilter []

Boy did I struggle to find this and it wasnt in the wardrobe !

Is that complete , I assume he bagged up all those bolts and bits including the gasket on taking it off. Mas

If 944man doesn't want it Mas, i'll put 2nd dibs on it dependant upon price. Taking mine back to standard air box aswell before I change my chip Cheers, Mike

Indeed there is ! I almost choked when I saw your post as in 'what snorkel'. Nipped in to the rear garage rummaged around and found what I had thought came off a leaf blower ! , its lucky ( or I am) that it didnt get burned in my last bonfire/clearout. Quite a taddy looking bit of plastic too the snorkel. It's quite thin and plain compared to the actual airbox which looks far more well made. Mas

Well 9544 man thought then porice was a bit strong fair doe's , the second chap says he wants it if it isnt sold and I'm awaiting a reply. I thought 50 quid for the wholde caboodle was a bargain and I didnt even know the snorkel existed lol If you've already paid your 180 sadly your out of the frame :p I do have another bit of your car actually but you wont need it. I think I told the chap who bought it off me. After I'd already advertised it for sale and described it , the starter motor played up I think only about twice but me being the way I am , I was gutted and couldnt possibly sell it knowing it now had a 'dicky starter' even though I couldnt get it to repeat the fault. As a result, I bought a brand new one from a company that I have used for alternators for the price of a refurb, the company are superb. When the guy finally turns up to fit it for me , he tells me the old one had a corroded/loose connection and I had wasted my money. I let him fit the new one anyway on principal to be sure ( a bonus for you should last years) , So I do have ' your car's ' starter motor lol. The missus keeps saying I should refurb it and E-Bay it but I never did as like I said it's not really my bag. Anyway it fits loads of 944's so I'm bound to need one , one day.
