Hi all
My son gets his provisional license at the end of this month. Any ideas for best type of insurance, and cost?...
Waiting for your thoughts whilst clutching my wallet nervously?!

Thanks in advance

Donald

Provisional insurance shoudnt be too bad-maybe around £800, but if he's 17, expect that to increase to approx £3500 when he passes his test. (This is for a Fiesta/Corsa/Metro etc)
The only way my Son could insure a car at 17 was if we bought him a classic-he has a 1980 Fiesta 1.1-that we could insure under a classic policy for £900

Try this:
Insure a motor with Direct Line with your son as a named driver - assuming that you will drive the car more than he does, otherwise it is known as 'fronting'.
The period that he is insured on the car counts towards a no claims discount with DL when he switches to his own policy.
This worked brilliantly for a couple of my kids, especially when they went to university before getting their own car. Each got their first policy for well under a grand for a Pug 206.

We used Quinn insurance - in his name, most reasonable by a long way. We felt that the problem with him as a named driver was that if he were to have an accident it would then impact on all my policies and push the premium for those up for about the next five years.
