Should I start saving now?

The 3rd model was very pretty but the engines just don't last and give appaling fuel economy. The RX8 seems more robust but alas has the worst fuel consumption on the planet. The problem with both is that the MX5 is both much cheaper to run, bullet proof and has near perfect handling.

I shouldn't advertise it on here but after owning a mk3 I have been very very tempted to sell up and get either a mk3 race car or a mk3 SC conversion for the road.

Mk3 (NC) MX-5?

Im more of an NB man myself... [:D]

The original certainly has its attractions, especially if one wants to race a RWD car for minimum expenditure. Like all these things though over time the newer cars will become more attractive as well their just newer with all that entails. Its also worth bearing in mind that the best race times in the Mk3 are only a fraction slower than class 2 cars. A touch over 2 min round Oulton for example and 2:36 round the power circuit that is Silverstone these days. Watching the in car footage its pretty amazing how hard those cars can be pushed looks a real hoot.

NA for me. I love pop-up lights! Besides, I've fallen in love with the beige leather and nardo steering wheel of the v-spec. Mmmmm[8D]

Performance boxer engines have been far from reliable Im afraid. Impreza 1800GLs may go on forever, but turbocharged Impreza owners dread the day that their big end goes, and they know its coming.....

I beg to differ.........my P1 has been as reliable as any car out there, you only encounter problems when the boxer engine start pushing out big bhp !!
mine was running 360bhp/340-50 lbs/ft with no probs at all
RodgerClarkMotorsport's Gobstopper(22b modiflied) is running close to 1000 bhp !!
