Shocks - any advice?

Morning all,

My brother's '86 Lux is just back from getting its MoT, and it has a list of advisories.

One of them is that there is 'movement' in the front shocks, with the chaps at the garage advising replacement soon.

With intent on budgeting for this work, what options are available for front suspension, and what recommendations would you give?

The car is used daily as a commuter, so we don't need coilovers or race-bred suspension - but just an information gathering exercise to see what you chaps recommend.

Many thanks,

Iain

Replace with stock shocks, if your doing the front pair it would also seem prudent to me to do the rear pair too unless funds are an issue. After 25+ years it'll make all the difference. I think the Koni sport shocks are also available for your lux but perhaps not required/wanted for a commuter.

Stock then, you should get a price from a 944 freindly OPC (try Leicester ask for Glenn) tell him you are a club member and were pointed to him.

Many thanks for the replies so far.

Re: the rear, would it be prudent to change the whole trailing arm assembly or just the dampers?

Stock on front and stock on rear.Unless you are wanting to spend a load of cash leave everything else alone.

Hi Ian

Having had bad experiences with MOT stations in the past advising front shocks without knowing much about our cars I'd investigate a little further before buying replacement shocks. Check to see where the movement is, also check the top mounts as if these are worn they can give a similar feel of movement.

Good luck

Pete

Hi Pete, thanks for the reply. I'll have a look and check for a second opinion, IIRC it was movement at the top mounts that was the major red mark against the shocks.

They did advise replacement - thinking about it, cost dependent of course, it's perhaps prudent to change the shocks since they're the original '86 items anyway. Unless this is a frivolous waste of time and money!

How much are new shocks for front and rear?

This is the key. If someone has the info, please post up, otherwise I'll get on the blower to an OPC.

Thanks guys for all the help so far.

Boge front 66.00 each
rear 62.00 each
all plus vat

Thanks for this info.

OPC Glasgow says n/s front is unavailable, the others are over £100 each excl VAT.

Looks like I'll be sourcing third party if required.

As above - buy them from Bert. This his website:

http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk/

Ring him up, tell him exactly which car you have and he will see that you get exactly the right part. Ive little doubt that BG knows more about 944 parts than your local OPC. He was selling them when I first joined the club in 1993 (when I was just a lad)!
