This link on You Tube is useful for servicing tips for beginners like me. Better if you can understand German, but type CC for English subtitles.

Only just realised that an air filter change isn't included in a "minor" service, so mine hasn't been changed since 2009! How often should it be changed, I would have thought annually?

That guy has some good videos. I watched his water pump video before doing mine... he makes it look easy!

Annually might be over-cautious for many S2 owners these days, given the lower use they get now. I guess it's an awkward job so you should take in to account the mileage, and conditons you drive in. The UK hasn't exactly been dusty this year, after all!

This is why I hate menu-priced servicing personally. The argument is that you know the price you're paying in advance, but that's obviously not true as there's always something you ask to be looked at, or they find, that adds to the bill anyway.

My indie lists the air filter in their 12K service, along with a lot of other things, such as checking the brake pads, that I feel are essential at an annual service regardless of miles. Their 6K service isn't a full service by any means, but it's what people might ask for every year if they do a low mileage. I preferred it when garages treated your car as an individual, and would have picked up on when the air filter was changed and tailor it to your use.

Mine was done c. 2007/8, and wasn't pretty when I took it out before Christmas! [&o]

thanks for your replies, I've since had my front panel off and the air filter doesn't look too bad (although I don't do many miles, so that explains why!) The filter has a date stamp stating 2007 on the side, but I'm pretty sure it was changed in 2009 when I had a "major" service and my belts changed.

Having looked back over my old service invoices, I'm quite surprised that a "minor" service is just an oil and filter change. For my last minor service I was charged £200 inc vat (£73 plus vat for parts and £96 plus vat for labour) for an oil and filter change, which seems pretty steep to me for such a simple job. That was at an independant porsche specialist, but it makes me think that for a minor service I should just get the parts myself and take the car to the mechanic round the corner (or even better, learn to do it myself).

To be fair the minor service should include a lot of inspection and checking work with the car up on a lift, but the only actual spanner-work is the oil and filter change. DIY note: if you get yourself a Pela oil suction gizmo you can drain the oil through the dipstick hole, and if you get a proper filter spanner the whole process is very clean, fast and easy. But it is good to have an expert give your car the once-over.

Interesting. I popped the badge panel off and inspected my K&N filter in the S2 after 12 months / 8,000 miles and it looked pristine. The K&N from the Golf after much the same time and mileage, however, was as black as the ace of spades and with great big chunks of debris in there.

Ditto. When I take my car for a service I am looking for someone who really knows these cars to check it over and pick up problems. The oil and filter change should be the least of it. Though I usually opt for the 12k service anyway.

Nice vids on the link. I do like to keep my tool chest pretty tidy but that workshop is very German! [:D]
