Service near Cambridge / Huntingdon?

Having acquired my 944 not too long ago, I am now looking for tech support around the Cambridge / Huntingdon area. I do the simple stuff myself: oil / filters / plugs / pads / disks etc, but come next MoT it is probably a good idea to have a new cambelt fitted - not mileage, but age (3 years this summer). When I first got the car I had a handbrake problem and took it to JWG near Peterborough. They charged me £100 to completely mis-diagnose the problem - I took it away and fixed it myself (one handbrake shoe had no lining!). JWG are a small place specialising in Porsche. And BMW. And Mercedes. So not exactly a specialist. Another place that is local-ish is Auto 2000 near Bedford - they look very good on the internet - has anyone had experience of their skills? Any other suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Well you have a good choice

The Main Porsche Centre Cambridge 01223 872872

Barr Tech http://www.barr-tech.com/barrtech/site/index.html in Cambridge

Auto 2000 http://porsche-repairs.co.uk/ in Bedford

I think you best bet would be get along to Club nights. Talk to other members and see what they have to say about the various options.

I would expect that others will crop up on here and advise.t

Mike, there's also TWG Motorsport in Peterborough.

Auto2000 is a small but well-respected outfit who've been in business for a long time. If you're interested they're having an Open Day on 31st March (Easter Sunday) where there'll be a number of Club members attending. Let John know if you'd like to be there.

Many thanks for the feedback - Auto2000 looks and sounds like a good operation - I'll do as you suggest and get over there.
I think our local PCGB meetings are at the Ferryboat Inn, which is half a mile from my house as the crow flies. But as the crow flies over the River Ouse and the Ferry to that Inn stopped in the mid 1800's, I'll have to drive all of 4 miles to get there. Better polish up the old girl before I go!
(When I said JWG, I meant TWG - oops)

Unlike the other responders, I've not heard of either the garages you've mentioned. My recommendation would be Mark Fish Motorsport based in Harlow jn 7 M11.

I've used Mark for my race cars, fast road cars, track cars etc since 1992 and can't recommend his approach, attention detail and overall skills enough.

His on 01279 431628 or www.markfishmotorport.co.uk

Yours

Soley relying on the service bills that my car has, Id recommend TWG over Barr-Tech every time. The bottom line for a lot of their work was far, far higher than I can explain.

In my turbos history there's a lot of receipt from Auto 2000, up to last year. Knowing how the previous owner was I'd guess they were a good outfit.

...just found my car on their web site too! [:D]

On the pricing page, http://porsche-repairs.co.uk/pricing/ - click on the photos of the 944's. When it opens up the Sapphire Blue turbo on the end is mine. How do I know this for sure? The GB sticker on the back and the small dent between the n/s rear light and the bumper! lol

It seems you have travelled to quite a few places lately!

It seems you have a couple of places to try locally :). One place I can recommend is www.emcmotorsport.com in Birmingham:). His diagnosis on issues with a previous 944 has always been great.

It's also not far to Promax Motorsport which is where mine has been going for the last couple of years.

As Simon says, I used TWG a lot, on the whole they were good, but sometimes seemed to rush stuff or didn't seem to care

A friend of mine started a Porsche Specialist last year in Rushden (20 mins from Huntingdon) and it was set up and is run by the ex Silverstone OPC Workshop manager. His remit is all about service with no up-selling targets.

What I did with my 968 was to put it in for an MoT/Service and then Tony invited me down to spend an hour going through the car whilst it was on the ramp going through the issues/niggles and coming up with a replace/repair/self-fix/leave for now list.

One of the Technicians drives a 944 S2, the Sales Director was fawning over my car and the owner has had 6 968s, so they know their front-engined Porkers!

They give out Mini Cooper D Courtesey cars

Autostrasse - not far from Colchester.

Great guys, brought up on the old cars, and have worked on more 944s than most. Will fit customer supplied parts and have often told me if something I have suggested doesn't need doing. Far better than having a garage invent things that need doing when they don't.
