Series Two Wiper Mechanism

Is it a common occurance for the drivers drive arm to detach from, I presume (as I havent removed the cover yet), the motor? I know that mechanisms were a fairly popular item to sell, but all of my experience is fifteen years out of date and I was asked for very few oval dash parts.

Should I source a good replacement before starting to take it to pieces, or do you think that its likely to be repairable, please? Also, why do your wipers only breake when its raining, eh? [:D]
 
Normal problem is the joint on the drivers side where the two arms meet you should be able to see it from inside the engine bay without removing the cover under te windscreen almost next to the OS wing. The ball joint normally breaks and it can be mended temporarily with a rubber band or even a loose bolt through it. Think you can buy the joint seperate from the rest of the mechanism and may even be able to replace it without removing the cover which you have to be careful with as they get very brittle with age and are hard to come by. Mine went last year but it was the motor shaft that snapped so easier to replace the whole thing motor arms etc if you have to do this it is easier to remove the cover and heater unit to allow better access otherwise its simple to remove but impossible (or for me anyway) to refit. Think from memory I bought a secondhand turbo motor and arms for around £85 from a breakers.
 
Common problem, I used an O ring as tougher than elastic band. Its the plastic bush rather than the metal ball that wears - new would be best replacement and I've heard someone say they took the whole assembly out without removing the heater, but I couldn't!
 
There are two link rods that connect the arms to the motor, one long and one short. A quick look at Design911 has them at under a tenner each http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/prod13016/Wiper-Arm-Connecting-Rod-Short-Porsche-944-1985-91-RHD-Cars/ so I would guess that Exeter Porsche will be even cheaper.

Simon they only ever break when it's raining because we don't habitually put our wipers on when it's dry [;)]
 
I used a shoe lace tied round it a few times, as a temp fix, worked so well I left it like it 4 20,000 miles off use.
 
If you are careful it is possible to drill through the ball joint and the mechanism arm and secure them together using a nut, bolt and washers - a bit fiddly though, and you need to remove the motor and mechanism from the car and strip it down

I removed mine without taking the heater unit out but could not get it to go back in and much easier to do with the heater out just make sure all the heater bolts go back in or the car will fill with water when it rains. Dont need to remove the heater motor completely, once the case is off just pull it towards the front of the car and rest it on the top of the engine.

Taking the heater out lets you properly remove all the crud that gets trapped behind particularly behind the cables that run along the rear of the bulkhead.
 
I managed to get my wiper assembly out, and back in, without removing the heater.
The trick, in my case, was to disconnect the wiper linkage to the passenger side wiper and then ensure that the balljoint and the long actuating rod did not catch on the heater. The really difficult part was undoing the nut which secures the alloy frame on the passenger side, and refitting it. I had to use a very small 1/4 inch drive socket, extensions and universal joint. I used two nuts in the socket when refitting the nut, the second being used as a spacer to ensure that the correct nut could engage with the thread.
