Self Refurb on 17" Magnesiums

In a fit of "baby & bathwater" I took my wheels away from Prestige and decided to do them "myself". My son is a Porsche trained paint sprayer so I had him dry prep the wheels, acid etch prime them and then paint them.

The colour and general appreance will probably not appeal to all but all opinions welcomed, good or otherwise.

I zymol'd them today and have now refitted them, see for yourself....

Interesting colour, but they do look very chipped, which I thought was a bit odd.
Not sure about the red ring.

What colour is the car ?

But, at least you got what you wanted, which is all that matters.

look good to me. Colour ok with right colour car of course and quite like the red ring but guess wont be to everyones taste. How bad were they before?

Car is Indischrot [Guards Red] and the "chips" are just reflections from the camera flash.
The wheels were in really bad order, previous refurb was poor quality.
Mel, me a tart, why thank you

I like the dark grey, looks very good especially on bright solid colours. Not sure about the redstripe and the 964 RS script. Certainly different and if you like it, thats the main thing. I certainly won't miss your car in a crowd of RSs!!

I like the colour myself Allan , post a pic of the side of the car with wheels attached and lets see............

PS. You really should point the Porsche crest to the valve [;)]

Some one said grey...I thought they looked black..

How much would he charge to do mine?

Brand new wheels still in the boxes...High Gloss black, thought they'd look good against the big reds

The colour is Anthracite. My wheels had been painted poorly at least 3 times before and were in $h!te order. Therefore they took lots of man hours to hand prep. I believe it was c3 days prep time plus paint time plus materials. He did say if he had to do more it would be £150-£180 per wheel depending on condition at outset, so new ones would be £150 per wheel. This is probably more than the 2 recognised refurb establishments but it includes any graphics of your choice. I am sure there would be a further reduction if no graphics were required.

Black would look great but it was not my choice as I wanted to be slightly different as silver or red were the factory colours on a red car and black was the choice of most red cars in Germany come refurb time.

First of all i think they look amazing ..................secondly Alan that is not expensive for the quality ,Diamond styling have done a few of mine 'cos they re one of the few who will rebuild 3 piece rims safely...............seem to recall Young Mr Hathaway has shiny black centers which he keeps immaculately .........look good to my mind ?

and the "chips" are just reflections from the camera flash.

I somehow assumed they were, but thought that I would be awkward.
I couldn't work out the graphic - now I know.

I do like the colour (the anthracite, anyway) - classy.

Thank you Vic. Thank you John. All comments good or bad welcome, after all they stimulate reasoned debate, which is after all the reason for this forum ?

Lawrence they were mainly rubbed down dry as I was very frightened of water ingress due to the porosity of magnesium, some water had to be used but it was sparingly used. No wire brush used but a DA sander was used on the very scaly bits. No chemicals were used it was all done manually.

ps Added side on photo of car still undergoing work.

Sadly he was on his own doing scooters etc but had to close down as he was getting poorer by the day, now he works for a forward thinking young man, based near Roade. They trade as Illusion Race Paints. Specialise in motorcycles, helmets, Jet Ski's and motorcycle wheels etc. The stuff normal paint shops either don't want or can't do.

If it was'nt so capital intensive I may have set him up in a shop but he is not ready for this step yet.

I'm looking at the business cards... one of the R10 members' son also works there ! Seems like it's an interesting operation. I was (at one stage) going to ask them to do some remedial work on my Clubbie, but the $£$£$ ran out....

Look great on the car, Allan. Hmmm, Anthracite or black? Easy choice - the one that's closest to caked on brake dust [;)]

Dom
I painstakingly hand applied Zymol Titanium to each wheel inner & outer so that brake dust vanishes with a quick squirt of water. That was the plan we will see what reality brings

Very nice, bet they look stunning on the car

For anyone else contemplating work on their mags, a word of warning.

The magnesium alloy, once exposed, oxidises much more rapidly than the aluminium alloys normally used for wheels. As a result any chemical preapration and etching of the surface has to be much more agressive to break through this oxide layer. Normal etch primer or standard pretreatment chemical setup may not work suffciciently, leading to poor paint adhesion and poor corrosion resistance.

Irrespective of the wheels you have, if they are being refurbed always ask for a step by step breakdon of what they're going to do. If they can real this off straight away then they know what they're doing. If they look blank, walk away and find somewhere else.
